I knew I could stir up the pot a bit! But I ment what I said and I said what I ment. No team could touch 'em last year and they look mighty purty this year. (I didn't even go to school there but I've been a fan since I was probably 10 years old. David on the other hand hates them and is a UCLA fan  Makes for an interesting house during season!)

Let it be known that I have never been confused with an Auburn fan but I think they would have given SC all they wanted last year. I once dated a Florida fan, needless to say it didn't work out so well.

USC has big problems. Spurrier re-nigged a bunch of scholarships and they had like 5 major recruiting/operating infractions and are under investigation.

I'll take UM, FSU and UF. As Dennis Erickson said when he coached in Miami, he could go out within a 60 miles radius of UM and built a national championship team. Look at the studs that come out UM football: Ray Lewis, Michael Irvin, Jeremy Shockey, E. James....

If MSU could keep their team from drinking and driving/domestic abuse we might have a shot at a decent season. JLSmith is still having to clean house from the Bobby Williams days.

That will probably work out in his favor. Not that I am pleased about this but Shane Matthews was a walk on.

In one fatal move the University of South Carolina now has millions of college football fans that hope they lose every weekend.

Bobby

what happened to OU? good question, now where do I begin??

1) I think I will start with the offensive line. I could have played better than those guys. I'm not kidding. I'm a good sized guy (6'4'' 219lbs) and I could have gotten out there and blocked better than those "men".

2) Our starting QB couldn't hit water if he threw from a boat. Backup Rhett Bomar gets the start this weekend, so we're saved there.

3) Our offensive coordinator sucks and sucks badly. TCU had 9 guys watching Adrian Peterson's every move and what do we do? run up the middle twice in a row (GENIUS) then throw to one receiver 40 yards down the field which misses, then punt. People in the crowd around me were playing a game to see if we could predict what we'd run next and 95% of the time we were right. It'd be nice to see what a different OC would do with OU's players, like that guy from boise st or louisville.

4) OU's coaches are too stubborn. If OU falls behind, no adjustments are made. Just keep on truckin' with what ain't workin (see Big XII champ 2003, Sugar Bowl 2004, Orange Bowl 2005). Sadly, we'll beat Tulsa with what "should work", then get blasted by UCLA, get by K-State then have Texas give us what we've given them for the last 5 years.

Our defense wasn't too bad except they got tired from being on the field too much thanks to an inept offense. If changes are made and the Offensive line stops being so offensive and grows a pair then we'll be fine.

Bama looking pretty average against below average opponents. But did look sharper this week than they did last week.

Eager to see how we perform against Spurrier's gamecocks who looked pretty good against Georgia.

Doug Texas looks strong, who do you guys have next?

Rice, then Missouri. Then OU.

The defense looked great as did the offensive line. I've been critical of Vince Young's passing in the past, but he threw pretty well on Saturday (some better receiving would've helped, but it was there when it counted). I'm worried we're ranked awfully high for such a young team.

I just can't get enough of looking at this (http://www.mackbrown-texasfootball.com/photoviewer/?photo_id=current#id=091005&num=40) though.

It was a close call. I was fine with the decision inasmuch as we had the lead. 275 lb Freshmen running backs need to learn to lower their sholders instead of trying to dance along the line and break the plane with the football. A week of hitting the sled should be his punishment so he'll remember to knock some people around next time instead of trying tip toe through the tulips.

I think there were a few questionable calls in the OSU/Texas game...but ultimately the best team won. I would argue that OSU's linebackers are by far the best in the country and if they had at least a DII offense they would have won.

Either way, MSU plays the next best thing according to the media in Notre Dame this coming weekend and after running up 599 yards of offense per game they will be tested. I will predict ND is going to overlook MSU and State will will 35-17.

I'll second that on Ohio State's linebackers. What a wall. Hawk was everywhere! As for the calls, they weren't shy about reviewing the important stuff.

Won't comment on the 'best team won' but OSU needs to can the dual quarterbacks arrangement. Smith should play all the way.

Agreed, BUT if Smith is the man...PLEASE mix in some more 'conventional' play calling and let Smith scramble when needed. They put him in like he was the 'second coming' of Micheal Vick. It seemed UT's defense started to play Vick, errr Smith, to run...especially when they cleared the backfield!!!

OSU linebackers are freaks of nature!!! You see Carpenter twitching!?!? Controlled fury!

Good game. Would like to see a rematch for the national championship!

I agree with the varied play calling, but the play calling when Zwick is in should be 'put in Smith' :)

Linebackers are awesome! After the first couple of series they adjusted pretty well, matter of fact, their adjustment to Young was no different than UT's adjustment to Vick..Smith :D

The quarterback swapping is a losing proposition. Texas made that mistake a few years back when they should've sent Chris Simms packing.

There is obviously something too quarterback swapping that only the coaches understand, as there are some that just keep doing it. But it just doesn't seem to work out most of the time.

When Mack Brown undertook it, the theory that was passed around (and I don't vouch for its veracity) was that he was making good on a promise he made to Chris Simms that he would play him. The theory goes that had Mack backed out on that supposed promise, it would have been bad for recruiting.

Of course, IMO, it's better for recruiting if you beat CO in the Big 12 Championship game and go to the Rose Bowl. All the same, I still remember fondly watching from the cheap seats as 5'10" Applewhite came running on the field like "Rudy" to an erupting stadium. The kid darn near salvaged that game after Simms 6 (correct me if I'm wrong) turnovers.

Again, the swap is, IMO, a losing proposition.

Wow, if true, very bad for your allumni to suffer thru. We haven't had the conspiracy theories floating around like that at OSU yet, but, you have given me some ammo to throw out to my buddies at the next game I going to in a couple of weeks. :D

east tx skier
09-13-2005, 11:21 AM
I'm glad those days are gone to be sure. You just wished you could take Applewhite's head, heart, and leadership abilities and combine it with Simms athletic potential. I haven't really paid attention to the situation at Ohio State. Is one of the guys noticably better than the other? It just seems that when you get people alternating leading the offensive charge, you lose the cohesion in leadership that marks some of the great teams of memory. I'm not speaking specifically to the Ohio State situation. Again, I'm not really familiar with either of the quarterbacks.

PointTaken
09-13-2005, 11:36 AM
It's one of those things, you feel the coach believes in one of the guys, Zwick, who was last year's starter, but Smith had to replace him in the last two games of the year because he couldn't get the job done (stunk acutally). Smith won those games BTW.

So here, Zwick starts the Texas game, zero movement on the first two series. Lo and behold, in comes Smith. He goes on to score on the next FIVE series. Hmmm..I think we should take him out and put Zwick back in, says the coach.

You are exactly right about the cohesion and continuity of leadership, but again, there must be something about it we don't understand....back to your conspiracy theory :-)

after several years of having a good team and minimal lucky breaks, fla state univ (fsu) has a deveoping team and is getting the breaks. barring key injuries until the backups get some at bats, fsu could be in the conference championship game. i know, most teams don't have the depth to lose key players making fsu's situation not unique. however, most fsu fans are still spoiled by their great run in the 90's as the sooners experienced in the switzer era and the huskers in the osborne era. go noles!

The seniors they replaced are worthless.

No matter what east tx says, he can't erase this :
63-14 = second most lopsided score in the series

ohio -- fsu played msu in east lansing when deon was at fsu. i believe msu has an aa reciever named pierless price (name may be wrong but they had a great receiver that year). also, msu came to tally town as part of the home and home series. pw had a phenomenal collegiate career. i still remember him catching that touchdown pass from weinke with the db's arms wrapped around him. his off campus screw ups probably cost him the heisman. too bad he has not lived up to his billing at the pro level. maybe seattle will be a better fit for him. so ohio, you are msu and not buckeye? if so, this explains your pulling for the hawks. anyway, should be a good game with lots of adult beverages consumed in both columbus and the living room.

ESPN Quote About UT Coach Phillip Fulmer:

Coach Who Should Ride The Bus To Work
Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer (25) came into this season with loads of talent at quarterback, a 1,000-yard rusher in Gerald Riggs and at least five experienced wide receivers. Through two games, the Volunteers have scored a total of 24 points. Their seven-point effort at Florida was just the third time a Fulmer-coached team scored in single digits, and it only intensified the chronic fan bashing of coordinator Randy Sanders. Yo, Phil: pick a quarterback and stay with him.

Hard to believe the Hoosiers are sitting on top of the Big 10 after 4 weeks. I should keep my mouth shut, we have Wisconsin next week, in Madison. :(

I had to buy the weekend ESPN PPV package to get the game, expecting a close one, so I was a little surprised at that too! I hope home field advantage played a big role, so maybe the games with BC and Miami are less of a threat to VT making to the ACC championship game. In Morgantown for WV this week...they alway can be a test.

Why don't you like Clausen? From what I can tell he is the better decision maker and leader on that team. I will agree that Ainge is the better athlete however.

Last year no one was doubting Ainge and his decision making ability nor did they question his leadership. Now they are, not directly, but challenging it none the less.

I am a firm believer that you dance with the one that brung ya, and as far as I am concerned Ainge sent out the invite last year in the Florida game.

I am not a huge fan of the two quarterback deal. I agree with you to one extent pick one and support him if it is Ainge so be it.

Is Ainge a Soph.? If so I would think you could groom him for the future by putting him in the back up role and not throwing him to the wolves every Saturday and hurting his confidence. (if it is any concellation I am usually wrong; just ask my wife  )

One thing is certain Ainge has the potential to be an exellent QB. :toast:

I think we have a great opportunity! Pressuring Leak and putting him on the ground a few times is the key. Plus our recievers will need to catch the dang ball  !!!!

They are a good team, but they don't have to play the level of comp that some other conferences do. Heck everybody is talking about the ASU game being a great win for SC, but didn't LSU go out there and win as well???

I tend to agree with the wildman here. Tough to go undefeated with so many good teams in one conference. I don't think that the PAC-10 as a group compares. I think Auburn would have given USC a run for there money last year.

On a side note I do think that USC is the best team in the country right now.

The option dosen't work so well if your Defensive Ends run 4.4 40s and weigh 280.

Gotta agree with Beau, the Vols better crank it up a notch or 12.
