View Full Version : Metal clanking sounds from tranny what the heck!!!

Ok, so it would seem every time I touch my '85 MC S/S. Something else needs attention. Iím getting a metal clanking sound out of the tranny. It's really bad in reverse but I hear it in forward as well. However, it works fine. No slippage etc. The sounds really seems to be coming from the bell housing more than in the tranny itself. I was at the boat ramp and ran into 2 guys that said the work for M/C. They took a ride with me and said seems to be within the bell house and they have never heard anything like that. Anyone have any thoughts on this. TY--

The stock original damper plate has springs that are enclosed in a small case. Probably broken spring or two. Replace with new style that has uncased springs. About $65 from Hale Marine but everybody has them.
x2 - damper plate. what is scary is if they work for MC and have never heard anything like that... those things are notorious for going out. lets hope they were sales dept.

Agreed with the crowd on the damper plate being the culprit. Remove the starter and you will likely find some parts.

Will I cause addtional damage if I run it this weekend as is?

Depends upon where the loose parts go, and what else breaks free.

Take the weekend off and get it fixed...
They could probably still get you that part by this weekend.

I pulled the starter. Didn't find anything. I wish I would of had a magnet to poke around there to see if I got any bites. I orderd a new plate today. Wow, Im not looking forward to this job. Its the what else in going break when I get into it that worrys me.
