So, Im picking up my block on monday to start reassembly. The machine shop said that I likely need to replace the heads as there are stress cracks in those through out. Whats the difference between standard and gt40 heads on a 351 windsor. I feel like if Im having to get new ones anyway, maybe I should upgrade?

Also with the GT40 heads, do I have to change anything else?

Upgrade to the GT40P heads.

Much cheaper than the gt40 heads and they have better flow and will generate more horsepower. $400 for a pair is what the going rate is for the 2.

Not sure about the rating for the p heads, but the GT40 heads will get you approx. 40 HP. Get the Ps without question.

You can find them here (maybe) http://www.tristatecylinderhead.com/

A friend of mine snagged a set a few months ago for US$575 + shipping. Their site showed plenty in stock (at that time) but when he called, they had none in stock but took a core and built him a set in three days. Upon his request (recommended) they drilled the bolt holes out to 1/2" dia. You'll have to reuse your current push rods and rocker arms but the rest is plug and play.

I ordered some GT40Ps off ebay from member Odessa*cylinderheads for $215 a piece, with brass freeze plugs, holes drilled to 1/2", no core charge and free shipping. They shipped fast. I coupled that with an Edelbrock Performer intake. the price has went up some but still not a bad price for some bolt on performance

That's a good price pre-drilled. I paid a little more than you and then paid a local machine shop to drill bolt holes to 1/2".

So many people talk about taking the heads to a machine shop to enlarge the holes. Is there a reason why people don't just enlarge the holes themselves with a 1/2" drill bit or or step drill bit?

It's the right way to do it when, like me, you don't have a drill press. Other than that, I wanted straight holes.

I'm sure this has been covered, but why do you have to drill out the bolt holes to 1/2"?

Do the GT40 heads come with smaller bolt holes than the what 351 heads have?

Just trying to catch up!

Thanks!

Yes the gt40 heads have 7/16" head bolts and come off the 302, and the 351w has 1/2" head bolts.
