Ok, I got the pertronix igniter 2 distributor and flame thrower coil. New plugs and wires. Engine runs great.

Now the tach is reading high. It reads about 2000 at idle. I removed the ballast resistor as the directions indicated. All wires are connected with crimped terminals.

Anybody have any ideas? Boat is an 86 with 351 Indmar.

sounds like the tachometer lead is installed incorrectly, is tach lead on the neg coil stud?

It is on the negative coil lead. I rechecked all connections. Everything looks good. The tach was never an issue before.

I read on another site that this is a somewhat common problem. Something about the signal from a point ignition being different from an electronic one. Maybe it is time to upgrade the tach?

At this point I would call petronix and get their input.
