Over Memorial Weekend I took my new X-15 to Lake Powell. When idling out of the marina my engine temperature started to climb up to 190-200 degrees. I quickly got the boat up to cruising speed and the temperature fell back down to 160. After another 5 minutes of cruising the engine temperature fell down to 120-130 degrees. So I took the boat down to an idle only to have the engine heat up to 190-200 again. I had no alarm when my engine temperature hit 200 and I noticed no performance issues with the engine. Any thoughts?

Check the strainer for blockage. Check impeller, even "new" ones can go bad if it's been sitting for a while. Check for water leaks around the engine.

Would a bad impeller explain the engine temp dropping to 120 at cruising speeds as well? Im thinking it could just be a faulty thermostat?

I had the same exact problem. It was an airlock in the filter basket. The dealer bypassed the basket and it seems to be working fine.

Is bypassing the strainer something i can do by myself? Or do I have to take it in to a Mastercraft dealership

I think so. I had a friend do it and he used the shorter hose when he bypassed the strainer.

I would still talk to the dealer. I have gotten mixed messages regarding this problem.

Ill talk to my dealer about it. My boat is stored 6 hours away from the nearest Mastercraft Dealership so I really want to avoid hauling it all the way over there!

I assume you have a 2102 model? Then check the circulation pump, mine was broken and is replaced 2 weeks ago
good luck

Did you replace the pump yourself or did you have your dealer do it?

Nate Smith is in Cincinnati for a clinic this week and 2 passes into the first set this morning, mine started overheating (5.7L Ilmor ~45hrs on boat). Nate commented that he has seen same thing happen to a handful of other promos at pro events and it seems to be H20 circulator issue. Called the guys at Cincy MC.......they are on it. More to come.

Luckily/unfortunately (however you want to see it) we had two other promo boats of "the other brands" ready to go......so the clinic resumed.

It is a warranty thing and the dealer replaced it.

Thank you guys for the help! Im glad im not the only one with this problem. Other than the overheating the 5.7 is an awesome engine!

Chalk another one up for a bad H20 circulator pump. New one is going in as we speak.

My 2012 X2 with 5.7 Ilmor is doing the same thing. It only happens at idle speed... usually when we are going from our dock through the no wake zone to the main lake... about 5 minutes. As soon as I give it some throttle the temperature quickly drops but the SERV REQ on GDIG and MIL light stay on and I can't use my GDIG display for anything else!!! Is this the circulation pump? Would that explain only happening at idle/no wake speed? Does anyone have any other information about this? Thanks for any input.

Ill try replacing the impeller this weekend and if that doesn't work I'll replace the circulator pump. Thank's to everyone for your help!

I have a 2011 X-15 with 35 hours on the Indmar engine. Mine overheated in the middle of Lake Chelan in Eastern Washington. Things got so hot that the paint started to bubble and smoke from the exhaust manafolds - luckily it seems that there was no damage to the block or the heads.
We were just told that it was the circulation pump. Mine looks just like cincyskier's picture - completely cracked in half.
Water testing tomorrow - hopefully it is fixed. Scary that things like this can happen on a brand new engine, but I am dying to get back out on the water!

How did you determine that there was no damage to the block or heads? What else could be damaged and how hot did it get?

If your oil is milky or has water in it - your block is cracked.

Did your dealer do some kind of compression test?

Where would I find this? I replaced the impeller and am still having the exact same issues as described above. It gets up to 200-204 at its highest and only for 30 secs to a minute, but that still seems higher than it should be.
