View Full Version : Ballast Tank Pumps and Engine RPM

Have 2012 X25 with 6.0 Ilmor. Manual says I should be running at at least 1500 rpm before running the ballast tank pumps. Does anyone do this? Is there any harm in being lower? What I've been doing is filling and emptying while we ride around, or, sitting in high idle letting the tanks fill and empty.

Insights?

I always fill stationary with RPM's at 1500 and empty moving forward slowly.

Any reason why you empty moving ahead slowly?

Read it on here in a similar thread. The consensus was to fill stationary but definitely have the RPMs over 1500 and empty in motion. Probably doesn't matter when you're emptying other than saves time getting where you going.

We usually fill and empty while going through the no wake zone on the way to our spot.

But if not I usually have it in idle. I don't see any need to rev the engine in neutral I am sure it has to mostly with the current draw from the pumps but we have a bunch of high output batteries for the audio anyway.

Idling at 1500rpm will supply more power to the pump and thereforeyou will hear the pump running faster...Same goes with fat sac pump plugged on the 12V, will run faster at 1500rpm...

As I have some fat sac plugged on the overflow of the stock ballast, if I don't run a full (4 min) filling cycle at 1500 rpm then the fat sac doesn't fill completely for example...

1500 RPM is to keep the voltage up. The inlet/outlet for the tanks are on the bottom of the boat. Think about it, trying to fill in motion is harder on the pump, likewise for empty, in motion puts less pressure on the pump to allow the water to flow out.

I have more than 300 hrs on my boat, use this method and I am on the original impellers with overflow bags in the rears. Fill standing still 1500 RPM's, drain plowing at 1500 RPM's. Pumps almost never time out:D
