View Full Version : Dash panels- 88 Prostar

The mount holes on my dash panels are cracking, so I figured I'd CAD up new ones and fab them. Right now, I've only got the left panel drawn out, I'll have the right side switch panel done early next week. I have a laser cutter in my classroom, and will make a trial set out of plastic, but I might have nicer ones done out of sheet metal and powder coated, depending on cost.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0NohA_D0jZo/T8AiJDctn2I/AAAAAAAAA88/kUfvr-TBP14/w497-h373/boat%2Bdepth%2Bgauge%2Bpanel.JPG

Top two holes are 2" in diameter, I have a depth gauge and hour meter there, the lower holes are for horn (left) and ignition key (right). The switch panel will be a copy of the original. I'm thinking for the switch labels, I might see if I can have vinyl letters cut, rather than trying to mess with silk-screening. (Possible to do on metal, but adds to cost.)

Once I get them done, I'll start a thread in 'For Sale' if anyone's interested in buying a set.

As long as it's Lexan, they won't crack.
Anything less will crumble.
Hint - LED

The laser cutter will cut anything combustable. It's not too happy with some plastics, because of the particulate matter that comes off- I was leaning towards black lexan, so it looks factory. Wouldn't be too hard to do something translucent instead, with LED backlighting. :)

Paper prototypes cut- assuming they fit well, I'll have plastic pieces cut Friday. :)
Then it's just a matter of getting vinyl letters for labeling the switches.

Tried something new for a prototype- got some engraving stock- black with a white underlayer. By setting line colors in the drawing and changing power settings on the laser cutter, I can cut through the panel on the black lines while only etching the blue text. Etching allows me to burn away the black plastic, exposing the white underneath.

I still want to play around with aligning the text for the switches, but I really like how these are looking. I made a practice panel with a plain font, then found the Hemi-Head font. I forgot to take a picture of the actual panel, so I couldn't label the various reset buttons. I'll correct that tomorrow and run another set of panels (hopefully the final set).

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-4h5AlolPleM/T8vabZObnyI/AAAAAAAAA-g/Zb0jBoXG1Ak/w376-h200-n-k/boat%2Bdash%2Bpanels%2BWITH%2BTEXT-weaver.jpg

A little more playing around and I should have something that's a pretty reasonable replica of the original panel, but with a few personal touches.

Are you going to possibly make a few sets for sale? I would definatly be interested in a set.

nkorep2
06-03-2012, 07:09 PM
I would quite possibly be interested in this. I have a 1990 Prostar that Im restoring, and I need to replace these panels. The arrangement I have is different for the left panel. I dont have a depth gauge, although I kinda want to install one. But I also do have a safety switch there.

Here's what it looks like:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-zEjMzlw2f6Y/T6cCEN2xlbI/AAAAAAAACBw/LJbD6Txdiw0/s640/2012-05-06_18-49-30_79.jpg

I would like what you have designed above with a cut out for the safety switch also. But I would like the panel to be black with white lettering. Is that possible?

PM me with more info please.

gweaver
06-03-2012, 08:53 PM
Thanks for the interest. I'll certainly make extra sets if people want to buy some.
nkorep2: I can do custom plates as well, but I'd need measurements for the cut-outs and a layout. (pm sent)
The image in my previous post shows blue text- that's just part of the drawing software. The coloring of the final pieces would look like the image below- a black plate with white text. The one below was made before I found the HemiHead font, but you get the general idea of what the final piece would look like.
FWIW, I haven't done a cut on plastic with the HemiHead font, so when I get that done, I'll be able to show exactly what the final will look like.

OK- dash panels are done. The HemiHead font looks really good- props to whoever found that font and shared it. I know on my hull the word MasterCraft uses a combination of upper and lowercase letters, but I think all uppercase (but with different font size) looks better.

They'll be installed tomorrow, pictures to follow. :crossesfingers Hope I got all my measurements right. Realized that while I measured the hole diameter for the hour meter and depth gauge, I didn't measure the diameter of the trim ring. I left enough space for a 1/4" trim ring on each gauge, so I should be OK.

Just a heads up for folks who are interested- since this is engraving stock (black over white), the edges of the panels are white. I don't think it's a big deal, but they will be slightly different from original.

Nicely done. I had a fabricator duplicate my panels on my 89'.

79823

Anodized aluminum, engraved and painted lettering. These should hold up a little longer than the stocks

gweaver
06-05-2012, 10:34 PM
I thought about going that way, but the minimum charge was $150, and that was for a plain aluminum panel with cutouts. Powdercoat and lettering would have been more.
I'm not too worried about holding up, seeing as how my boat's 25 years old. If I get 25 years out of these new panels, that's good enough for me. I can always knock out another set if I need to.

Dash panels installed:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-CMJiVEDCv1c/T9UfCriRsgI/AAAAAAAABBA/XQ1geRNrfBQ/w497-h373/12%2B-%2B1

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--Y5TK-CZ5_8/T9UfcrkCK6I/AAAAAAAABBY/axF13mdzI2Y/w497-h373/12%2B-%2B1

Slight goof on the switch panel- left a set with a painter to see if he could clearcoat them and cut a second set out. Forgot to re-set the home position so the cutouts for the switches were slightly off, which is why there's a tiny bit of space between a couple of the switches. Also didn't realize I ran a version of the template without the labels for the breakers. I'll be picking up more stock this week (I hope) and cutting another set to make sure they work.

Anyone know where I can get a replacement horn button? Although I've thought about moving the horn over to the throttle using a B&M shift knob:
http://dagostinoracing.com/images/B&M-80545.jpg
and substituting a 12v charging port.

Any chance anyone has done their homework on 1993 Maristar 225 panels? I need to replace mine as well. It looks like the key panel, horn panel and rocker panels are similar to others, but not the main gauge cluster panel.

Irritating news. Seems that the outfit I ordered the engraving stock from hasn't ordered it yet. They're waiting to get enough orders together for a 'minimum order'. If they haven't ordered it by the end of the week, I'll source material from somewhere else so I can get things going again.

Mahoney- If you have your old panel, get me a detailed, dimensioned drawing and I'll see what I can do. (if you're interested in having panels made)

I haven't heard back from Mahoney with dimensions yet. I did get the engraving stock and will be working tomorrow and Tuesday on getting panels cut out and ready to ship for those that are interested.
Maristardd- if you can, you can get your own dimensions and send them to me and I can get going on drawing up the part. I'll need dimensions for the panel as a whole as well as sizes and locations of the various mounting holes and holes for switches and all.

Panel update-
First production run is done.

Two people have requested slight modifications:
nkorep (switch panel + gauge panel with text only, no holes)
rjracin240 (switch panel + gauge panel with no depth gauge)
Those sets of panels are done.
I have nkorep's address and will ship pending confirmation he still wants them. I have no contact info other than email for rjracin240. If you still want them, please confirm.

Other people who have expressed an interest in the panels are:
bonk87 (I have your mailing address, PM sent)
kevin89mc (email sent to your gmail)
chrisoswald
190skier
j.mccreight@hotmail.com
d2jp
milkmania

I have 6 sets of the full panels available this run. At that point I will have run out of engraving stock. I'll do first come, first served on these sets.

If any of the above people are still interested, I need mailing addresses so I can get panels sent out. I'll send panels in a padded envelope via USPS. I can send UPS/FedEx if you specify, but that will probably increase your shipping costs.
RE: payment. I have Paypal but I'd like to ask if the purchasers will cover any associated fees. I've never been a 'seller,' so no idea what the fees are, but if you guys are willing to work with me, I'd appreciate it.

If other people want panels, I can do another run, but I'll need to order more material (different source, should be much faster to get it).

FYI, I'll be out of town from the 23rd to the 30th, so a second run, if needed, will be done when I return. Likewise, if you don't get me your mailing address in time, you'll have to wait until I get back to get your panels.

Cheers,
Greg

Here a scan of my ignition panel for 94 Maristar 225. No engraving, just something to be cut. Will SolidWorks let you pull this image in, size to correct scale against ruler, then let you draw against it? Or what is easiest for you for me to give you on dimensions? I did not see that I could send image via PM, so am posting.

I'll do the best I can with the photo you sent, but I think a tracing would be a good start. Once I get the panels drawn, I'll send you drawings that you can print out and make sure everything matches up. I'll PM you if I have any specific questions about dimensions.
I'm going out of town next week, but in August, I'll have plenty of time to work on them.

GGreg,

I'd like to get a set of panels exactly like the ones pictured, except instead of the hole above the ignition key being used for the hour meter, I want to put my depth finder there.

My depth finder is the same size as the tachometer hole on an '89 Prostar.
I'm assuming you know the diameter, but I can measure it if you need me too.
I'll send you a PM with my address and get you to give me a quote.

Thanks!

Greg,

YES! - I'm still interested for my 94 225 maristar direct drive. I never got good panel tracings to you, my kids have kept me too busy. I did just pull the two thin panels this week, and was going to tackle instrument panel next week, so timing is awesome. (my panels have glued themselves to vinyl after 20 years, and no rear access)

Looks like only difference is I don't have the 'extra' v-drive (??) indicator between the horn button and the trans/engine temp lights on the right panel. But you can leave that indicator hole there, just w/o label maybe, and I'll use for something else, probably "BATTERY ON" to remind me to switch it off after use.

And if you are open to the re-labeling, I'd love to re-label 'ACC-1' 'ACC-2' on the lower switch panel to -> "HEATER" "SHOWER"

PM me on cost and how to proceed - I'm _very_ excited to see you've got this!

Hi GWeaver, I have a 1987 ProStart 190 and wanted to see if you have a right switch panel and left ignition panel (similar to the pics that ChrisOswald posted). For the ignition panel, I'd be ok with the stock template or I am thinking about adding a depth gauge and could use a template with an extra hole for the depth gauge. Thanks! Phil

Gweaver...can you make these for me?? Im restoring my dash an i have a few spots that are broken on my current panel...thanks!!

Several of my dash panels were badly cracked on my 96 Maristar. I started looking for replacements and I came accross: http://www.frontpanelexpress.com/

They provide free software to design the panels, when you are done you click a button and they are automatically priced and ready to order. It took about 10 days to receive my order. I had the panels made out of 3mm black anodized aluminum. They turned out great and should outlast the boat. Here is a before and after pic. Note, the previous owner re did the gauge cluster and I haven't gone to have a new panel made to match the black.

The ignition panel on the left was about $25. The engraving and color inlay does add up so the other panels were more. The warning panel was $50 and the switch panel was $80. Shipping was $5 for the whole order. I found a 20% off coupon online that brought the price down to $130 total. In fact they gave me a referal code that is good for 20% off: QJ603XWV

Thanks to gweaver, my '89 finally has nice looking dash panels! Ignore the old switches & breaker boots, they look really bad now against the new panels. 2 old pics and 2 new pics. Had to do a little trimming of the existing dash due to the layout change, but no big deal. The screw holes didn't line up perfectly, but that was due to the existing ones being a little out of alignment. Close enough for me.
Thanks again Greg!

Greg did some panels for me last fall - I finally replaced the panels that had bad cracks, thought I'd post since who knows how long until I do the other pieces. (Guage cluster has bolt frozen nuts, and nuts spinning in the fiberglass. With no rear access to this area, I may have to drill them out?

In any case, I had a set done in black, and one in brushed stainless (over plastic). Here's the two stainless. I'll probably use the stainless for dash, unless I notice a lot of glare/reflection. In that case, I'll go to the black. In either case, they look so much better than the 20 year old busted up stuff I had. Thanks Greg!

i have a 1990 Prostar 205, but with the outboard. Looking for both panels. My switch panel is the same, but where the hole is for the blower switch is a round hole for the horn and the fuses in the center are not labeled on mine.

The ingition side would be the same (without the horn) and depending on if I went with dual guages or one guage and the outlet for the 12v that I seem to have never used for anything.

I can snap a picture tonight. roughly what do these cost?

I'm afraid I've never done panels for your boat, and I have no templates to start with. I had a friend help me with the Maristar panels I make, but I don't know if he'd be willing to help me with another set. I can check with him and find out, but it might be a couple of days. If he was able, I'd need you to trace your existing panels and send me the tracings, but like I said, let me check with him first.
