View Full Version : GPS, chart plotter on newer boats

Is anyone using the chart plotting navigation screen on their newer boats? In order to activate this feature on mine I understand that I need to get a GPS sensor from MC? Is this the same as upgrading to zero off? Any ideas on this? Cost?

i can help you with that. I'm in the process of doing this myself. I've been researching this for a while so here's the process:
1. You need to purchase the activation code from medallion instruments to unlock the chart plotter. If i recall it was around 170 USD (don't quote me on that one, i activated the chart plotter a while back). Once you do that the chartplotter automatically becomes accessible.
I thought it would feed off the signal of the zero off but as it turns out, it gave me a no signal error.
2. After contacting medallion, i was told I needed to order the GPS kit which was 108 USD. The part number you're looking at is: 8960-00188-01. I ordered mine a few days ago. It includes the GPS puck, the adhesive to attach and the pass through fitting. They said its made to order so it takes around two weeks to ship. I should receive mine by end of May. I'll let you kinow how the install turns out.
3. Finally, you need to get on navionics.com and pick your chart (it has to be a Gold chart). From there it will list several online retailers through which you can buy the chart. This comes as an sd card which goes into the blue viper unit behind the dash(there is a slot on the face covered with a black rubber cap).
That should be it. Hope this helps.

Well I tried to call Medallion this week with no answer. I sent one email and left two voice mail's. How did you get in touch with them?
I guess they aren't too customer service oriented?

Unlock Code from Medallion cost $430.00 ( does anyone have a work around for this?)
Navionics Map for you local area= $149.99
GPS Antenna =403920 GPS Antenna $325.00
Total cost to add= $904.99 I was very interested in adding but for $1000.00 I think I'll pass. Especially when you can add it your ipad, iphone or Andriod device for $9.99.
