I'm not sure where to start on this, but the amp meter never leaves the straight up position, or Zero, when the boat is on. I know the alternator is charging, as I hooked up a voltometer at idle and was getting around 13.6 volts or so at the battery terminals. I had the dash apart and looked behind the guage, and didn't notice any corrosion or anything of that sort. All wires were tight, etc.

What's next to check? Where is the sending unit for these guages? How can I check if it's bad, or how can I check if the guage is bad?

Boat is an '83 S&S

The ammeter in my 76 hasn't work for ... 20 years. IIRC we bypassed it and I plan to install a volt gauge some time in the near future. I forget why it was bypassed TBH.

Is its only purpose to really confirm that you are getting a charge from the alternator? I can just carry along a voltometer if that's the case...
