View Full Version : Buying a new tower PS 190

Buying a new tower they all seem to be made in china. It will be mounted to a 1987 Prostar 190.I am looking at an Aerial airborne, Vapor, and a MT1

MT1 is a little short

Vapor is 2.25 aluminum

Aerial looks almost identical to the Vapor

Roswell Area 51 is the only one I have seen in person but will not powder coat

Difficult shopping without seeing in person my fear is to buy it and it shows up as a box of junk.

I have the airborne. It's decent but I made the mistake of letting the sales person talk me out of the anodized version due to the accessories not being available in anodized. The bare polished surface looks great for a week or so and then becomes a maintenance headache. If left outside for 6 months or so it will look like it spent a year on the ocean compared to anodized.

I am thinking about having it powdercoated black

I wonder what the difference will be?

how about sturdiness? I have a couple of 270 pounders I have to pull out

I've hear that the aerial black powder coat isn't very good. Fades after a short amount of time and becomes powdery. Must not be very UV resistant. I've been thinking about having my tower powder coated to reduce maintenance though.

Mine is very sturdy. I'm 6'1", 210 lbs and I don't bother it. I did pull a dude that was like 250+ lbs once and I didn't even think about it until now. I didn't hear anything from the tower. With any universal tower you will need to retorque the bolts once or twice a season.

I will let you know how it goes I think I am going to get the vapor with the black powder coat

and put some Roswell r 6 speakers with a roswell 500 watt 4 channel amp I am not sure about a sub yet?

updates and pics to come

Just curious you didn't mention New Dimension. Do you not like the shape of them or too dear?

http://www.samsonsports.com/ Give these guys a try, they make good stuff here in Washington State

Samson would be my first choice but $300 shipping to get to texas makes this one a little high.

The new dimension has good shape as well but again a $2,000+ tower The vapor installed is $1,400 I know you usually get what you pay for but I am hoping that the vapor is ok

thanks for your comments it is difficult to buy without seeing or putting your hands on the material so all comments are appreciated

not sure where in the south you are located..... but i'm getting ready to get mine done in North Carolina at Modlins Welding (http://www.modlinswelding.com). He builds everything to the boat and it is custom. I've seen a lot of his stuff and an area dealer recommended him as an aftermarket tower. I'm having mine built and installed in a few weeks. I will post a picture as soon as I get it. May be worth it for you to try and find someone local that welds..... just a thought I didn't think about until it was suggested to me. I was really close to getting an Aerial.

I just got the airborne polished aluminum for my 88 prostar. I'll post pics when I mount it up.

this is a pic of my tower that was custom built. everything was built, bent, welded in house. couldn't be happier with it. adding my speakers hopefully this week is weather will be nice enough for me to pull it out and work on it.

I put a monster tower on for a guy once. It wasn't too bad. Didn't look as nice as the current pics though.

Here are some photos from the New Dimension website. Definately looks the most "oem" for your hull.

You get what you pay for.

$3000 tower on a $7500 boat. What could go wrong?

Aerial I put on my old boat. Sold it to a friend so I still see it and the powder coat looks great. It's been at least five years since I got it. They were under $800 shipped back then. My friend bought an anodized Hydrowake for around $800 a couple years ago, I installed it and it was almost identical to the aerial.

I have a 2003 190, During a storm last year a tree fell on it and destroyed it. We just finished having it fixed up looks great. Ill throw pics up soon, but we are looking for a tower for it. We have looked at Roswell and others, but they do not have the same look as the mastercraft towers. Does anyone know how much or how to get a hold of Mastercraft Mini Tower or Regular Tower?

OttawaMatt, look at this link: http://www.newdimensiontowers.com/galleries/mastercraft/2001-2005_Prostar_190.html#

New Dimensions fashions their towers off of OEM. That's probably as close as your going to get and I'm sure you will pay their price or more if you can source through an MC dealer
