Need some help with the repair of the fuel sending unit on my sport star. For some time the sending unit has been stuck at 3/4 so I used the instructions off the internet to repair it. Before I put it back in the tank I connected the leads and checked it by tuning it upside down and the fuel guage was working fine however, when I put in in the tank and turned on the key it gave me a correct reading of about 1/4 tank but only for a second and then it moves to below the "E" mark. Each time you turn the key on it gives a correct reading for about a second or two the goes to the below "E" reading. I checked that both leads are connected tight and they are, couldn't see anything else that I could have done wrong so before I go and take it all apart again I thought I would check in with those much smarter than I.
Thanks for any help anyone has to offer.

What happens if you add fuel to your tank, does it still read E?
Just a guess, but maybe the float is sinking and you need a new one?

Depends on the sending unit and how you repaired it. If it is the type with a float contained inside a tube with two magnets attached to the float then there could be a problems. The polarization on the magnets and whether or not they stayed attached to the float. With the sending unit out of the tank test it with an Ohm meter by moving the float across the circuit board and watch for changes in the reading. If all of that is working then yes the float might not float too well.

Thanks for the tip, It looks like that sending unit has a 3 wire lead, my gauge only uses 2 wires, do you just use 2 of the 3 wires?

That is all possible, I used epoxy to reattach the magnets back into the slots and if the gauge is connected to the leads it does read correctly as you hold it upright and then tip it upside down so it could be a float issue and I am thinking it is probably better to just buy the new sending unit. It looks like it might be a better and new improved design.

I found one with 2 wires.....I will try to find another...www.skidim.com has this one.. for a little more

Contact them they'll steer you in the right direction. I'll search around as well.

What's the height of your tank or the length of your current sender?

I was confident that I had fixed it so I did not measure the height of it, my mistake, now I will need to pull it out and measure it before I buy a new one. I will give them a call and see what they suggest for a 2 wire connection. Thanks for the help.

Don't look at it as a mistake..look at it as a another reason to tinker with the lady... :D
