View Full Version : Newbie, do I have a unique '89 Prostar?

Hello! I recently joined, and have read most of the posts here. Took a while! I have a '89 Prostar with the Safe T Bar thing (about 600 hrs on it), and I wonder if the previous owner changed the graphics, or if it was sponsored as an actual tournament boat somewhere. Three interesting things about the boat: The "Prostar 190" decal and picture on the sides near the back were removed, and "powered by PCM" decal was added. I think I've seen the same big PCM sticker on some older MC's. I can still see a bit of the outline of the Prostar logo, the gray background has faded a bit! Obviously with it being a '89, it has a 351 Indmar engine in it, not PCM. Also between the MasterCraft and PCM logos is "World Record Ski Boat." I'll have to check with MC about getting the old Prostar stickers.
The second odd thing is the color scheme. I downloaded the '89 brochure from the MC website (and the '88 manual - both very cool!) and my color combination was not in there. It is close to the gray color, but there is no yellow striping anywhere as shown in the brochure. Does anyone know if MC offered custom color schemes? One of these days I'll snap a digital pic and figure out how to post a picture.
The third odd thing is it has some kind of magnet/sensor in the bottom of the boat (in the bilge and through the hull), with a cord up to the dash, which had a hole cut in it. My guess is some early form of timing device for the course. I asked Perfect Pass and Accuski about it, neither knew anything about it. I think the dealer I bought it from said the original owner was a very good slalom skier. (I'm the 3rd owner I think). I did just install Perfect Pass, what a world of difference!
That's enough for my first post, I'll ask a few more questions and give more details later (Boat Buddy, removable platform brakets, etc.)
Any thoughts? TIA,
Kevin

The decals sounds like my brother's '88. The color scheme may have been special ordered. And the sensor on the bottom of the hull sounds like the puck for a depth guage.
Welcome to the group!

cant help with any answers; my 88 doesn't have any of your goodies, but I would like to say welcome, and congrats, sounds like a cool boat that you don't see everyday!

Sounds like one of the previous owners change the graphics. The Powerd by PCM logo is odd considering that it came with an Indmar. Was the boat repowered with a PCM?

Oh and welcome to the board.

A depth gauge puck - hadn't thought of that. I've been thinking of getting a depth gauge. I'll have to see if I can use the existing sensor if that's what it is.
Regarding the engine, I'm pretty sure it is original. Probably the prev owner had an old PCM powered MC and felt like changing the graphics.
Thanks!
Kevin
