I have a 2004 Volvo XC 90, and recently we have been having a problem filling the gas tank. It literately takes 20 minutes to fill the tank. The filler neck fills up and shuts the gas pump off. I have tried different gas stations, different positions of the handle and nothing has worked. If I can get the gas to run at approx. 1 gallon per minute (I have timed it), I can fill the tank with out continually shutting the pump off.

I have been under the auto and there is no obvious damage (kinks, bends...etc) to the vent or filler tubes.

Any ideas??

Thanks,

Joe

Have you tried one of the volvo forums? There is usually someone else that's dealt with whatever issue you're having. Good luck. That sounds like a hassle.

we had a similar problem with a older volvo where the vent was plugged from a wasp nest.

I don't know but I would be it is attach to the top of tank where the sending unit goes in. You might be able to at least see the rubber hose coming off it.

I'm not sure where the vent line is. the dealer fixed it...got rid of the car.

These newer cars dont have a vent to the atmosphere, the wasp nest was prolly on the canister vent valve which would set a ses light, you probably have a problem with the rollover valve thats in the tank and not allowing the air to escape up to the filler neck, and the tank parts prolly are not serviceable seperatly, so your going to need to replace the tank.

My wife has no problem filling her XC 90. The most common problem is over filling. The gas (when she fills it) 7 out of 10 times will spill over. I have neverhad the problem when I gas it up. I think in her case it's operator error. Sorry not much help here
