My steering column, the adjustable, on my 1989 prostar 190 is real loose. I am assuming it needs to be replaced. Any idea where I can purchase a new steering column for my boat?

Thanks

Dave

It is the part that the steering wheel connects to. It tilts. It then connects to the main steering assembly.

My '89 Prostar doesn't tilt....or maybe I need to go outside and look.

Or can this be rebuilt? It tilts with the tab as shown on the picture

I can wiggle the steering wheel in all directions. It is like the spline and shaft have worn such that there is too much play now between them

Mine doesn't either, I better check as well, maybe I missed it all these years! I think tilt option may have come out in '90, pretty sure it was out by '91.

Okay, I made a mistake, I have a 1990, not a 1989.

Looks like I might need just the collar piece.

Am trying. Have you looked already? Am hoping we can find them. Been told the 1990 is
Teleflex?

making progress. My steering is a Morse Command 290 rotary 15 foot cable, but the rest of it is Teleflex. Looks like teleflex tilt mechanism "deluxe" made from 1988 to 1994. Now the question is can I find any parts for this deluxe or a new one. If not, The current splinned shaft tilt should fit the Big-T Helm, item# 121009, in-stock, $148.75, but it is not clear the finishing will work correctly.

I was able to have some collars made to replace the worn out part in my steering. They were not cheap, but it works great. If anyone would like to buy one, let me know.

Okay, now that I have the collar fixed, I need to replace the worn out hub in the steering wheel. Anyone have any idea where I can get the hub, or an entire steering wheel if that is my only choice?

Thankshttp://h2ofun.net/images%20dave/steering%203.JPG

Please post a picture of these collars. I don't understand what is or was bad. I thought it was a bushing and now I am not sure.

Hows the hub worn out?

When I did my moving of the steering wheel around, I could see the play in the steering unit. This is why I had collars made and this solved 90% of the movement. Now that I have my steering unit rock solid again, I can see some movement which is not caused by the collar on the steering wheel. (My steering unit no longer moves around, yea)

So, no idea how it was worn out, maybe it needed to be greased, but just trying to get the boat back to as close to new as possible.

Note that the pic used is for a keyed adapter, but the description clearly states a 19 tooth shaft.

The Steering wheel itself is a Grant Challenger Part #470414 (its just the wheel that small hub isn't included) I just bought one for my 88. Wish I could fix my loose wheel tho

Thanks. But sounds like we both need the hub. I continue to look. Got to be someone out there that knows where to find one w/o having to put in a complete new steering system.
