Was having some engine issues over the summer, so I bought a cap rotor and coil. When I took off the old coil, I noticed there was a black fluid coming out of the top where the wire was connected. Is that oil leaking from inside the coil?

Yep, our coils are oil filled types.

And definitely time to replace it when it starts to leak.

Nice. thanks guys. could this have been part of the back firing issue I have been having? I also noticed the points in the cap were worn out. They look like they have been flattened by a hammer and the edges are mushroomed out.

Change it over to electronic ignition and get matching coil. Points suck. Electronic ignition is the cat's meow. I grew up with points and I have always hated the time it took to keep them set and in good shape. I still have a couple of dwell meters just in case of a nightmare. I am not a fuel injection fan even though it is a better metering system than carbs because of inherit weakness's in that system.
