on my 93, i noticed that my prop spins a little bit when in neutral. it barely moves the boat and it doesnt really bother me. my concern is that something s going wrong with the tranny. hopefully not serious , i cant take any more boat problems.

That's normal. Do a search on here it's been discussed many, many times. As much as you're on here I can't believe you haven't read about it.

It's fine. Can't remember if it's the clutch pack or what, but it gets old and does that. If you're running it on the trailer, a quick/slight reverse will stop it. My inboard mechanic said that most older boats do it and it's nothing to worry about.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the damper plate?

It's been a while since I asked my mechanic about this. I remember his saying "clutch" something or other. I don't remember his saying damper plate. FWIW.

I know - I know!! The muffler bearings need some shampoo to clean them up!

I remember the posts and there are fixes, but didn't seem worth the expense. Seems like a common problem on older transmissions.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Yes I have been "lurking" for a while and I sure have learned a lot on this site. The way I see it this is going to be more than just a shampoo fix, so here's my technical suggestions. Since there's no park brake to help stop the boat while the prop's spinning we're going to have to fix it.
1) Use a "left hand, metric Crescent wrench" to tighten the lock nuts on the muffler bearings after the shampoo cleaning. Make sure you tighten them till they strip, and then back them off a quarter turn.
2) Don't worry about the oil dripping out the bottom, that's just from the leaking tranny seals, but there's someone (I think 02lightning) who can get you hooked up with the warranty dept. at MC. Looks like there are enough complaints to possibly get a "class action" going if need be - I understand he's a legal boff!
3) You thirsty? - No problem, Skeeler's on his way with some Corona and Bud Light and boy does he have some slimmies to go with the beer. It may take a little while..... he's on a Chapparell and it's loaded.
4) Most important - sorry I should have said this first - put lots of 303 on all the vinyl to make sure they don't turn pink or any other color from the lack of exposure to sunlight.
I'm off to the swimsuit thread to make sure all's well there, but I'll keep checking on the progress with this repair.

O.K. - so I went to the swimsuit thread and there was not a thing going on, but then I remembered that Skeeler was on his way over with beer and slimmies, so no pics were going to be posted.
I broke down and went to help my 15 yr old son, whos an RC Heli-freak work on his heli (more technical help) and was telling him about Rods spinning prop problem. Him being familiar with all these spinning things, said "Dad it's simple... just tell them to go to WalMart and get some spinner wheelcaps for the trailer or one of those spinning props for the trailer hitch". I asked him why that would help and he said - "Once he gets used to those spinners, the boat prop spinning slowly won't bother him".
