Some background: We have been having a little trouble with holding speed as well as with getting the boat on plane. Our dealer recommended the 1285 prop from ACME and of course, the 5-blade is new and shiny and promises better gas mileage. OJ also recommended their 4-blade but as it turns out we already had that prop on the boat.

Disclaimer: I'm not a hydrodynamic engineer and I don't pretend to be. This is not a scientific analysis, it's just a little real-world testing that was done on our boat in our lake with our criteria.

So we tried out each of these on the boat this afternoon and recorded the following statistics with no ballast, stock ballast, and stock+plug and play.
- Time to get on plane (s)
- Top Speed (from GPS)
- RPM @ 20mph (using speedometer/perfect pass reading)
- RPM @ 30mph (using speedometer/perfect pass reading) *just with no ballast to test cruising speed
- We also tested our surf setup for RPMs at 10mph.

Weather: 65 degrees, light wind.

Now the raw data:

Comments: The 1285 is an excellent prop especially if you're running a lot of ballast. It's an animal. The boat snaps up onto plane and is very responsive to throttle changes. It also has some improvements on the fuel economy side over the stock prop.

The 5 blade is something altogether different. Although it doesn't have the raw bite of the ACME, it is no slouch either. The RPM gains in all speeds and all ballast configurations are very hard to ignore. The deciding factor, though, was something that was not expected: With the 5-blade propeller, the boat was a lot more responsive at idle speeds. Steering seemed to be improved, reverse seemed to snap the boat back to the stbd compared with a lot of drift with the 4 blade propellers.

At the end of the day, we put the 5-blade back on and will give it a try tomorrow with some actual riding conditions....

Cool observations, thanks for posting your results. The 1285 prop has awesome gains on the hole shot. :) I bet the top speed was not very different over the stock prop as the 30 mph RPM's are very close. Any top speed data for the different props?

Did you notice and differences in the wake shape or rooster tail with the different props?

Was the idle maneuvering of the 1285 prop the same as your stock one?

Give us an update after you are done riding. :)

Top speed on stock was 37.5, 5-blade 38.5, 1285 39.
I didn't see any difference in the shape of the wake but I didn't ride at all yet.
Yes the idle maneuvering with the 1285 was pretty much the same as stock.

Thanks for the input... performance wise that ACME 1285 is the cats azz for hole shot and it even added 1.5 mph top end, impressive! :)

Tough choice I would say on which prop to choose, but....

I guess it depends on your boat usage, if you start and stop a lot with riders then the RPM difference of the 5 blade over the ACME for any gas savings might be a wash in the end. However they both get on plane noticeably better than stock and if you are mostly wake boarding at 20mph with full ballast the 5 blade RPM at that speed is definitely going to get you the best fuel efficiency. So I can see why you chose the 5 blade prop. It should make you much happier than the stock prop.

Have Fun trying it our and post up any more observations you have after some time on the water. :)

I run the OJ 14.75 X 15.5 on my 2005 X-star (MCX) and am pretty happy with its all around performance. I would bet your top speed would be more with this prop, but will suffer some on the holeshot. I run 2000# of ballast with 5-6 people in the boat. No doubt the 1285 would be better for me, but fuel economy would suffer a little plus not enough top speed for footin'

What is your top speed with that prop? that's the one OJ suggested i try on my 205dd to help with holeshot when loaded with ballast. i dont want to lose too much top speed though since i want to try barefooting next season. i know our hulls are vastly different but still looking for your thought on it.

Stock was the OJ 14.25x14 "High altitude" prop. It is was fine for up to stock ballast but struggled beyond that. We don't ski or barefoot so top end wasn't really a factor for us. I am curious what prop is stock with the other motors and without the high altitude option.

I never check it with a GPS, but speedo shows around 41-42. If OJ says this prop will fit your boat, it should be pretty fast. Your boat weighs alot less than mine with a smaller wetted surface area. Is your trans 1-1?

My '05 x-star came stock with an OJ 13.7 X 17 and it was a pig! Good top end but terrible holeshot.

mine is an LT1 powerslot. right now it tops out at about 50 so i can lose a few mph on top, and i could definitely use a bit more down low. it's hard to hold a steady speed when i really load it down

shawn, did you ever figure out what your stock prop was? i am very interested in the five-blade oj. i have a 2008 xstar with the 8.1L engine. i am currentoy using the oj 14.75 X 15.5. i am happy with the prop except my fuel consumption is in the 8-9 gph range.

Ole Miss. I have the exact same prop on my X-45 with the 8.1, and yeah it's pretty solid. However, I talked to Eric and he said they are developing a 5-blade specifically tailored to the 8.1. He told me look for the release mid spring 2012

X-swagger. I have a 2006 x45. New to me and want to reprop. Currently has a 13.5 x 19.5 ACME. I guess it is the wrong prop. What is the top speed of your boat? And rpm?We do mostly surfing and boarding but a ill barefoot so wanna go 41 mph. ACME recommended their 1997 dimensions of 14.5 x 17.75 cup = .180.

great prop reviews, looking at repropping our new to us X25 and according to wakemakers.com the ACME 2305 is better again? did you test this or does anybody know anything about it? thank you
