Earlier I posted a thread about purchasing my friends re-done 1976 S&S (http://www.tmcowners.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=3886)
Well I found a different boat instead. I just picked up a 1989 TriStar 190 . Test drove the boat in KY and $8000.00 later I came homoe with the boat. 534 original hours. I will post pictures later. Thanks to everyone who pointed out that I pretty much had my mind made up on the S&S. I re-evaluated the whole situation and decided to look around and I purchased the TriStar. Again, thanks for all the input and advice.

Yeah I know it sounds like a lot but when I was looking at 1976 for $7000.00, it didn't seem as bad. With all of the extras it came with, the '89 NADA was $10,500.00. The boat is in great shape and the interior is mint. There are a couple little dings but none on the hull. Mostly pier rash. I'm sure now that I have an MC I will have ton's of questions. I'm glad that there is a resource such as TT.

Rod, I had an 88' for almost 5 years.
Does not track very well.
Wake is not bad, no tail. Pretty small wake shortline.
Not good in the course.
My wife pulled me a few times through the course and had a difficult time staying in the bouys. She said that I pulled it off track. (A rare occasion for me, the course was left up a few times when I was out there and it was pretty rough on one of those days).
Very solid boat.
Tristar was a good boat, never let us down.

I have the manual if you need a copy. I also have an 89 tristar and have a working knowledge of it. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
I also have been accused of pulling it off line in the course. I thought I was bad. I guess not so much.

Thanks for all the replys. And LakePirate, I would love to get a hold of a copy of the manual. I'm sure I'll be pickin' your brain when I have problems with the boat.

Nice looking boat D!
Reminds me of something...
We never had problems with our 88'
Had to have the carb rebuilt one time.
The kids really liked the molded platform.
I put a 4 blade Ambush 13 x 13 prop on it and it made a big improvement in performance.

That boat looks awful familiar! :D That is one thing I noticed last night when I was on the lake. I have a small leak in the carb (raw gas + inboards = Danger) It pools ontop of the manifold at the front of the carb. I have a friend who services inboards coming out to take a look at it tonight. I hope it's something simple. I really don't feel like putting money into this thing so soon since purchasing. I have been hemoraging money these last couple days

I think that you got a good deal.
A bit more on the carb, you're still in good shape.
If you still have the original prop, I would highly recommend the Ambush and use the original as a spare. You won't regret it. (about $300-$350).

Thanks for the info on the prop. I'll most likely get through the season and start to work on it during the winter. Hopefully the carb issue is just a gasket.
When I get a chance I'll get more pictures up. I'll get some of the interior as well.

Can you see where the fuel leak is coming from?
The scanner at work is broken. If you pm me your address I will mail it too you.

Can you see where the fuel leak is coming from?
Yes I can, I'm not very mechanical when it comes to carbs so I don't know how to explain where the leak is. It is at the front of the carb, though where there is some linkage attached. When the motor isn't running and I push the throttle forward it leaks and pools on the mainifold right at the front of the carb. It doesn't appear to leak as much when running. I'll get some pictures of it tonight and throw them up tomorrow.
Check your PM...

Congrats D nice looking boat. I have a 88 190 and am running a 13x13 4 blade ambush. Big improvement over the stock 3 blade. Pulls 2 footers at 42 mph GPS checked with 3 in the boat. As said the salom wake is not the greatest but all boats are compromises of some sort. Have fun with it, sound like you got a good deal.

My tristar was an excellent performer.
Little hint, back seat can be raised up as a sunning deck. 2x4 fits perfectly in the little cutouts. Build a couple of braces and a strap to keep the seat from sliding forward (like the new 197) and enjoy :)

I have an 89 Tristar Closed Bow. Makes a great ski boat. We run pretty concecutive 32's off. Nocomplaints. A bit of spray setting up your gates, tha's all.

Danimal,
I have had a 90 TriStar for six or seven years. I have been very happy. Your fuel leak is probably the accelerator pump diaphram right under the front bowl. It has a linkage that presses it and sprays an extra bit of fuel into the intake as the throttle is advanced. It has four screws.. Try tightening them with an offset screwdriver. They have a tendency to leak after a long period of non use. If you need a new diaphram, SkiDim can fix you right up. You can even get them at the autoparts store with your Holley #, if the parts guy is good. Have fun. I think it is a good slalom boat. I have pulled skiers into 35 off. Yes ,you have to correct steering a bit for the skiers pull. The wake compares very nicely to my son's 97 Nautique. I prefer to ski behind my TriStar because I am used to it. I just wish I could do that shortline stuff. Too old :) .

J., That is exactly where it's leaking from. Good call. I had a friend look at it and he said the same thing you did. I put her back on the trailer and will take a screwdriver to it tomorrow. My buddy told me that if I can't tighten it up to go to the auto parts store and get a 30cc diaphram for my make of Holley carb (does that sound about right?). I'm assuming that if I have to pull the carb off to fix the diaphram that I will need a gasket kit to put it back on, hey?
Thanks for the replies... very helpful!

Great tip! Do you have any pictures?
No, never did take any pictures, sold the boat rather quickly to someone skiing with a friend.
I actually created a welded ***'y, but tried the concept with 2x4's first.
single 2x4 running gunnel to gunnel, supporting the front.
two short 2x4's standing on end supporting the back at the proper height.
While I didn't do this...because I prevented forward movement with the welded assy, a high strength bungy attached to the bottom front of the cushion to the rear floor, and you have a really nice sun platform.

After I took the boat out of the water last night, I pulled the back seat to see what you were talking about. I like the idea. Thanks for the winter project.

Danimal -
Be careful that the float bowl is the same. I purchased the wrong one and it did not work. The auto parts guys that I was using couldn't find the right one. Be careful when you reattach the fuel line as it has a pressure valve and overtightening will cause it to leak as well. You should be able to buy and accelerator pump at any auto parts store along with the gaskets needed. You shouldn't have to take the whole carb off just the front float bowl.

Well... Got the carb fixed tonight and she is back in the water. Pretty easy fix. She ran a little rough out of the box. It wanted to stall every time I put it in gear. So I jumped her into gear quick with some gas and ran it about 30mph for a lap around the lake and then opened her up for a half lap. After that, she ran great. Thanks for everyones suggestions and patience. This place is great!

Yeah, but it probably took me longer than it should have. I pulled a bone head move when I got it put back together (or so I thought). I forgot to tighten the gas line. Needless to say, gas was everywhere when I goosed the throttle a little to see if it leaked :uglyhamme Yup... it leaked alright.hehe

Personally, I don't ski much anymore. I got a couple of bad wheels. 6 knee sugeries. When I do ski, it's out my back door on Browns Lake in Wisconsin. I used to show ski when i was waaaayyy younger. My kids are into it now.
