View Full Version : Plug and Play Ballast

All, decided on ordering a X15 or X25 for spring. Question: do I spend the cash on the plug and play ballast option? From what I've seen here for decent surf wake with either of these boats I'll need additional ballast. I want it to be as clean and built in as possible and would like to a avoid sacs on the floor/seat, etc...

Do I spend the cash on this option or are there better or cheaper ways to do it?

My opinion is based completely on the 2011 version of plug and play but I say skip it.

You are correct that you will need some extra ballast for surfing but you can have it done better and cheaper aftermarket. In 2011 the addition of factory plug and play disabled the ballast timers (not necessarily a bad thing) and removed control of ballast completely from the BIG (not so good). I was told that this is no longer the case in 2012 but I don't have any confirmation.

If I could do it all again I would skip factory plug and play and install custom bags with dedicated pumps instead.

You can skip adding the PnP option and just buy/install aftermarket sacs. Your rear lockers will be able to use the stock pumps/plumbing - so you don't lose anything there. If you want additional ballast - say, in the port storage compartment or even on the seats - then you buy a 12v pump and fill them manually.

I will be doing all of the above on my X-25. Have you ordered your boat yet, Nick?

I just bought the 2011 X-15 - see my post in the Ballast section. You will have to add something for surfing. I'm happy with the $150 bucks for my set-up. The factory one is great, but you are looking at $$$$$$. If money is not an issue - do the factory. Otherwise do your own.

Boat is ordered. Gonna do an aftermarket set up.
Thinking 400 each rear locker, 400 sac for whichever side is surfing (I surf starboard), then whatever I can buy that will fit under seats up front.

I got the X-15. Wakemakers.com is ur best option for adding ballast. Bought my kit for like $245 installed myself in 20 mins. Use the overflow hose to fill you bag. Kit comes with everything needed for rear locker bag install.

I talked to the dudes at WakerMakers and they are in the process of measuring up the 2012 X-25 for their Fly High bags. (Apparently, the 2012 model will have some different dimensions in the rear lockers and under the seats on both sides.) Although you can use the stock pumps to fill/drain the bags, the fill level meters on the B.I.G. won't tell you when your after-market bags are full. So, my plan is to go with as big a sac as possible in the rear lockers (maybe 1100 lbs) and just keep an eye on them as they fill. I probably wouldn't use all 1100 lbs, but the price difference isn't steep: $99 for 400#, $149 for 750# and $189 for 1100#.

I also plan to have additional bags available to place on the seats/floor when it's just the family in the boat. Again, the Tsumani pump is only $99 and the bags fill/drain in just a few minutes.

And they don't take up a ton of storage space when they're not being used ...

Do we know if you order the std BIG and no PnP if the ballast pumps still run on timers in the relays? Is there is difference in the pump relays (2011 or 2012) between the PnP and non PnP set ups?
