Surfing without swim step?

Anyone ever tried removing their swim step for surfing? It would be a pain to get back in the boat (unless you have a pickle fork with the ladder in front), but every boat I've ever seen the swim step digs into the water when surfing and seems to screw up the wave. I've seen mods that people will do, but I don't particularly feel like taking a saw to my teak. I might, however, consider ditching the teak for a day if I knew it would make a material improvement in the wave.

Just a thought... curious if anyone has tried it.

I haven't gone without one, but I have made a very modified step that was completely out of the water. It made a pretty big difference in the wave.
