Saw this term in that twin props thread. Never heard the term before, but I KNOW what it means. Did that once in the turn around at the end of the course. Pulling up skier after shortening line. Heavy power while turning, then suddenly boat lists hard to the direction of the turn and we are headed for the trees. (the other way) Scary! Only remedy was to chop the throttle. Onlookers are asking why I drove up in the weeds. Once was enough.

Heard the term, know about the problem, mostly heard of it happening on a few different older (like 60s & 70s) boats, but never experienced it.
From what I gathered, when the boat leans over, the rudder & prop can both be clear of the water so you have almost no control.
Guess you could lean into it!

Just out of curiosity I ran a Google search (http://www.google.com/search?q=%22chine+lock%22&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official) on it. Some interesting reports from this group & others.

I'm told Correct Craft had a problem with it once in the early 90s. Don't remember the exact year though.

Hadit happen to me a few times inmy dads old Glastron V-153. Scares the crap out of you. Lucky I was in a wide open place. I can't imagine it happening in a high powered boat in a tight area.

He may need the whole bottle if this thread goes where I can only imagine it's going to go.

Chine lock was on the MC's that hadn't had the winglets added into the chines then they went to the short lived rudder with the wing on it. The rumor was it happened at the AWSA test. Could be also on the CC's but I didn't know about them. I beleive it was around 97 - 98 year range they did this. I'm sure someone can correct the year of the winglets.

Even though I'm an old guy, remember I am a Newby here. Had no idea that my post would renew an old controversy. My episode while it caught me by surprise was easy to understand once I got over my fright. I was under power turning hard, pulling a skier who is just coming up, at an extreme angle to the boat. We all know that these boats plant the bow and pivot when turned hard. The pull to the side of the skier on the pylon helped to rock the boat over on the chine and suddenly the prop "walks" to the surface and the bow digs in on one side. ( toward the skier, inside of the intended turn ) The curvature of the hull while it lists, guides the bow away from the intended direction of travel. And you simply can't turn back unless you chop the throttle and allow the prop to settle.
I've only had it happen once with my old TriStar, and I have over 1000 hours on it now, with LOTS of that being in the slalom course. I consider what happend to be driver error on my part. It was something I didn't know could happen. Now that I do it will never happen to me again.
And yes I remember that stuff about the late 90s boats and the rudder fins, but I did not pay much attention. When I went riding through the weeds that day I did not make any connection to that controversy. (I was too busy trying to figure out what the heck just happened. ;)

Save your shampoo :)
