Thanks to people on this forum, I have located the leak in my boat and it is coming through the shaft packing. Next question. I have tightened it a bit but was wondering how tight I should go? I heard somewhere that I should tighten until one drip every 30 to 45 seconds comes through. Is that true? How do you know if your need new packing -vs- just a tighten? Thanks!! Tim

Yes a few drops every minute is fine. if it will not get better than that. then you need new packing.

you can get it at skidim.com

Here's (http://www.boatus.com/boattech/Casey/StuffingBox.htm) a good description.

If you need new packing, skidim has the regular packing rope (wax or whatever) and GFO packing. The GFO costs a little more (still under $15 I beleive) but I was told it lasts longer. Since it is so light, you can request that they send it in a regular envelope to save on shipping. If I remember right I ordered from their site and was able add that comment with my order.
