View Full Version : Teak Platform Flex?
The Governor

Hey everyone! I have a question for ya. It seams my teak platform has a LOT of flex in it. It seems to have been neglected and rather dried out.
When I stand on it, it drops down a bit.....maybe an inch, inch and half. Maybe more, I haven't measured it. But it doesn't seem too sturdy.

Hmmmm, never seen that before. Is it the wood flexing or the brackets? What year boat again?

It's the wood flexing. I can tell because the feel changes when I stand on different parts of it.
It's a '91 PS190. The wood looks pretty dry...probably neglected.

I have a 1990 PS190 and just refurb'd the deck last winter. I found a couple places where a little wood glue was needed. I also replaced one of the stringers cause it was cracked pretty bad. Cost me $25 for the wood plus some glue, sandpaper and teak oil.

That does not sound right. It should not flex much if at all. I agree with RickDV. Better check it out before you start to hear crack instead of seeing flex.
Good luck

I'm thinking of just replacing it. I believe the wood has just dried out too much and has somehow lost it's strength.
Has anyone here dealt with Teak World? How are their replacements?

I would like to know, are you 100% sure what you have is Teak?

To the best of my knowledge it is. It's the original platform that came with the boat.
I'll be home in a couple of hours and I'll post up a pic.

My 84 has some flex. I'm no lightweight though.(no fat sac either!) I don't notice the deck flexing as much as the brackets flexing on the hull. A little bit of flex on the bracket makes a lot of movement on the deck. Everyone says teak lasts forever I hope so. I have priced the raw lumber and it will knock you back a few! The screw holes on mine had stripped out where it attatches to the brackets I replaced the pieces with mahogany

Gov,
I just replaced mine (90 Maristar) from Teak World. They were great, the only issue I had was they were missing 3 pieces of teak that support at the transom. But since it matched the old platform I was able to "reuse" those pieces. I would just verify the whole platform when you order. Oh yeah they don't have CC Machine, so COD or Cashiers Check.... They are in Tenn. :D

Governor,
on my 91 PS 190, I get very little deflection with I get my 285 pound lardass up there:o
I can feel a slight bounce if I move around a little, but nothing like 1"

Governor,
I have a '92 PS 190 and I have the same issue. I have noticed a lot of flex as well. It has been like this for quite a while. Do not know if this helps but mine has been like this for quite a while. I have a hairline fracture I filled but the flex has always been there. My opinion, check for cracks and if none let her rip.

My '94 PS205 has some flex to it as well and has had this flex since it was new. This is normal to my understanding.

Gov, Your swim deck would have cracked by now if it were dried out! The fact that it bends and not crack is okay. Maybe a previous owner has planed down the teak as i did.
Mine bends also. You would be surprised how much abuse they will take. Get under their
and make sure all the fasteners are tight.

My 87' has no flex. Now I'm only about 185, but it doesn't move.

Teak will never rot, use 80grit sandpaper and then re-oil the deck and use it until it breaks. Make sure the brackets are not comming out of the boat cuz you have bigger problems then

Well, I figured out where the flex was coming from. Should have checked this first. :uglyhamme The bolts on the platform were loose. :D
DUHHHH!

Well, I realize why the screws were loose......they're stripped out! I took the boat out yesterday, and my wife was the first to hear a pop....and then I stood on it later, and POP again. When I got home, two of the screws that were loose had come out about 2 or so threads. They didn't come all the way out, and all of the other screws I tightened were still tight.
Is there anyway to fill in the holes and put the screws back in?

I'm having the same problem, with one board that keeps coming loose, I think my teak is dry since it has not seen oil since last fall. Hoosier Bob said there is a wood glue that you can put in there and reuse the hole, but did not get the name.

Could you just put new screws in next to the old ones rather than filling the stripped holes or is this on the mount location and I've misread the post? If it's on the mount location, how about dropping a bunch of toothpicks in there with some wood glue? Every time I remove my brackets so I can oil the platform, I drop a couple of toothpicks in the holes to give the screws something to grap whether they need it or not.

That's a good idea! I've never done a lot of woodwork, so this is new for me. I'll try and get some pics tonight when I get home so you guys can see what I'm talking about.

I put second screw between the old screws (and a couple more) and on mine Doug, and they popped right out also!

It's not a real technical fix to say the least, but then again, my platform is solid as a rock (knock on teak) after 13 years and a lot of removals of the screws.

If you put any new screws in a new location be sure and drill a pilot hole or your screw will crack the teak.
