View Full Version : chirp, chirp, chirp....impeller?
As the title says...I'm getting a consistent 'chirp' for a maybe 60 seconds or so at start up. Was mostly at cold start and now sometimes when warm....this just started as we were finishing up the day's fun today with a few restarts while on the lake. Engine temps are perfect.
Seems to be coming from impeller housing, is this a common sound before they fail?

The impeller is always wet so I doubt it will chirp.
Sounds more like your belt is the problem.

Or the bearing

bearing is going.... better prepare for a new pump....
Thanks for the information everybody, the boat is an '89 ProStar - 337hrs. Will check skidim for a pump.....

I have a new pump since last year. It didn't chirp at first start. Then I replaced the impeller and it did. But only for 5 seconds on cold start. I am going to wait til next impeller switch before getting new pump. And make sure I use the silicon lube better than I did last time.
If it turns out to be the pump...looks like skidim sells a rebuild kit for $25.
OTOH, I have no idea how old the belt and impeller are. Got the boat w/ 325 hours on it a few weeks ago, planning on waiting until 350 hours and then go through all of the basics (impeller, belt, plugs, filters, oil, trans fluid, etc.).
For a 22 year young boat, she's solid and pulls like a locomotive:)

Open the doghouse on your next restart and watch your belt, If its super floppy and chirping give the motor a little gas and watch you alternator, If you alternator bearing is bad you will actually see a bit of light smoke as the belt slips on the pulley.
Installed a new impeller and the noise is gone! The old impeller had two notches worn in it...and was brittle also.
