How do you set the timing on a 1989 Prostar with a 351 Ford engine? Can it be idling with hose attached in the yard or does it need to be in the water warm and under load?
Reason I am asking is my boat is lazy coming out of the hole and mechainic told me the timing is off. I also talked to Mastercraft guy who said it may not necessarily be the timing but with age the chain could be getting worn and the timing would have to be advanced to help until the chain is replaced.
Thanks in advance.

How many hours on your engine? Yes you can run engine in driveway, either with a fake a lake or the bucket method to check timing, run engine till operating temperature in neutral, hook up timing light to spark plug wire #1 and adjust distributor until you reach 10 on the balancer and lock down distributor bolt. Never put the transmission in gear with the boat out water as this will damage your propeller shaft bearings.

740 - What if the timing is Ok. Is a worn timing chain likely?

Possible but not likely with those hours
