Had my daughter and son in law come up to the lake last week, now they want a boat and dad's opinion is the key. They are looking at a 95' ps205 for 12k with 490hrs or an 02' X7 for 22.5k with 290hrs. They want a boat that they can ski, wakeboard and wakesurf with. The ps205 has no tower or add ons and the x7 has everything. So which boat will work better for them? Hurry, because they want to buy right away, LOL.

Thanks, Kevin

I agree with Skidog. The X7 without ballast is an awesome ski boat, and with ballast will throw a nice wakeboarding or surfing wake. The tower can be used as additional storage (if it has ski / board racks) making the boat even more people friendly and will pull a skier when you have too many people to use the pylon. I had a '92 PS205 and loved the boat, but my PS197 has a much nicer ski wake and rides through the chop on a busy day like its not even there compared to the bounce of the 205.

Either one will make a good wakeboard boat, but if they decide to add a tower and ballast to the 205 they could spend nearly as much after upgrades and still not have as solid of a boat.

I have owned a '93 205 and just bought a 2003 PS197 with tower and ballast at the end of last season. The 205 you speak of is at the top of the price range once equipped with a tower/racks and a ballast system and the 197 is at the low end of the range. I would have another 205 in a heartbeat- saying that, the 197 is a small improvement in all categories other than the slalom wake (looks, seating, ergonomics, handling, ride comfort and solid feel). My 205 had the 285hp 351 and my 197 has the MCX- the 205 is faster top end and acceleration by a reasonable margin. It would be like buying a 1993 corvette and a 2003 corvette- both do the same exact things, one maybe a little more stylishly and slightly better but one is cheaper. It always comes down to the $$. If they want to talk to someone personally who has owned both boats let me know and I'll give you my number.

Thanks for the responses sor far. We are taking the X7 out tomorrow for a test ride. Now the million dollar question----How big a difference am I going to notice when I cut that wake at 32mph on a ski? Remember I own a 93' ps190 so thats what I'm comparing it to.

93 190 will have a bit softer wake at longer line lengths. X7 will drive like it is on rails in comparison and will have less spray. Keep in mind that the X7 hull has been in production for 10 years now and has set plenty of records. If the wake of the X7 is a problem it's not the wake that is the problem. It will feel different though.

Pretty much this. If you're coming from a 93 190, the 197 might be a better bet. The 205 will be a lot of almost, but not quite. Honestly., in the end, there really aren't any bad choices here. All great boats.

I'm not selling my boat, I may never sell it. But, I will be spending rope time behind their boat, and I like to take a run in the morning on my ski, then wakeboard till the water sucks, and surf all day untill I can ski again. I ski 22 off at 32mph, so thats what I'm looking at.

Also, is $22,500 for the x7 a good deal?

I've had both, and would recommend 197. Much nicer ski boat than 205. Depending on the cost of the upgrades to 205, just remember you'll get more back in resell for the 197 down the road.
I've heard after July 4, most consider the summer half way over and start marking things down, getting ready for next years new inventory. If their patient, they might get an excellent deal.

I think you could do as well getting money back on a 205. Th 197 has been around for over 8 years with few changes to the hull. Their are a lot of good examples on the market. The 205, particularly the 1st generation 205, is still a very sought after open bow slalom machine with fewer good examples, particularly fuel injected ones for sale.

Okay I have owned both....there are a lot of factors at play here.....

First off the 02 X7 does not have a hooked hull.....you want the hooked hull that was introduced in 03.....do a search..trust me you want it....

If the x7 does not have at least the MCX I wouldn't get it. Many will argue this point but the boat is underpowered with the 310 pedator motor.

Has the upholstery been updated in the x7? That was one of years that MC used the thin vinyl that will split easily and cannot be reordered from the factory.

The price is good on the X7 but it will deperciate more quickly than the 205. The 205 was/IS a great boat and is high demand in the market. It has had the bulk of it's depreciation already and you could easily own the boat for a couple of years and sell it for what you paid for it.

Skiing at 32mph, and 22 off, IMHO both wakes are pretty awesome and you wouldn't notice a huge difference between the two.

Does the x7 or the 205 have perfect pass? Speed control rocks and is awesome for wakeboarding or slalom at any level....

The 95 205 has fuel injection which is fantastic....no carb, just turn the key and go....of course so does the x7 so its even there.

Other than that it's all owner history that will make the difference.

Just my two cents, hope it helps.....

Yes, it has pp and I will know what other goodies it has tomorrow. Thanks for all the input.

Vinyl is a big consideration on the 02. If it hasn't been replaced it will likely need to be soon. I'd budget $3500 for that.

Condition of each is more important that the model as others have mentioned.

Took the x7 out for a ride yesterday and the kids will be picking it up tomorrow. Beautiful boat. Thanks for all the responses
