Guys,

I thought I would post this here before everyone gets really busy this weekend. I am installing a new permanent magnet starter on the old 83' this weekend and wanted to triple check to see if anyone had any pictures of the soloniod rewiring on the back of the motor for reference? If not can someone provide the proper info on what wire goes where.

I emailed Vince at Skidim and he is working on it, but figured trying here wouldnt hurt. I searched alot of threads but no picture.

Thank you.

Sorry, no pictures but I think it's fairly straightforward. I think you just move the outbound cable to the inbound side and install the wire they provide from the outbound side to the starter. I put one on my '89 last month. It's great!

GEE TEE were you experiencing it getting hot and not turning over? I am going through that right now... Actually just made a thread about it. It seems to only happen at the end of a long day of running. I thought next time I would pour some water on it to cool it down... or prop the motor box open while not running.

Yeah the starter was zapping all my juice!! New starter kicks *** and I also upgraded to an interstate 24XHD battery which is good for 1000CCAs so now I am almost spoiled. Boat runs great and starts every time. Let me know if you need any help in the future!

Just replaced my original starter and starter relay last week thru Discount Marine

STARTER KIT 302/351 Permanent Magnet. Part # 1201
Left Hand Engine Rotation 2 bolt, New Style Replaces Old Plunger type.
Most PCM Mastercrafts (exception a few late 70's had RH engines)
This starter kit replaces the old plunger type starters. It is smaller and more powerfull than the old style and bolts right up. These starters are for left hand rotation only. Kit comes with additional wires needed for installation.

Starter Relay Part # 1228

If you had the same plunger type starter as I did, the wiring for the new PM starter is very different. The kit comes with a replacement Starter to Relay 12V wire,( Red 4G) and an additional wire ( Yel/red stripe 16g) which also connects to the starter and the relay.

I have complete instructions and took a number of install photos if you need them: here is the starter:

I ordered the same starter as the next poster posted up, however I got mine from Marine Parts Source for about 118.00 bucks. Same starter, same wiring, just cheaper.

Let me know if you need anything else.

I installed mine a little bit ago... turned over but wouldn't start.... like the timing was off... the starter got red hot, so I stopped... took it back off. TRhis is how i wired it. The thick wire that went to the old starter got moved to the other side of the starter relay... with the thick pos...and the thinner wire going to the breaker. I ran the new thinner wire to the original post that the old thick wire was on... is this correct? I feel i did sometging wrong...

Mystery solved!!!!!! Starter is the wrong rotation!!! LMAO. Took me a sec to realize it was spinning the motor the wrong way!!!!!!!!!! I put the old one back on, replaced the 4 gauge wire running from the starter relay to the starter... all good. SO, I have to return this one. So... we have "right" rotation motors? I felt like a real dumb azz for not checking that before I put the Arco on.

I made the same mistake. I believe we have left hand rotation engines. But, the starter turns right to rotate the flywheel left.
