Check with a local rebuilder, they can usually convert alternator to marine status.
It's mainly adding arc proof screens to the vented housing.

Definitely Do Not use an automotive alternator in your boat. You run the risk of a spark from the alternator igniting gas fumes causing an explosion.
Take your alternator to a local rebuilder and he will take care of it cheaper than a new unit. You can opt for al higher capacity upgrade at the time as well.

I recently went through this... I opted to go with a new higher amp one wire model... It was about 20.00 more than having a 27 year old alt re-built.

I own and 1984 as well. Use a marine alternator. It's a safety risk not worth taking. I would never endanger myself or others by installing a car alternator on a boat.
