I have a new prop I ordered from oj props and am hoping to install it today. I have seen some say you have to remove rudder and others say you don't. Does anyone know if on the xstar with a 14.75x14.75 factory prop being changed to a 14.75x13 do you have to removed the rudder? And if so I am assuming the best way is to remove steering linkage bar from end of rudder shaft and slide rudder through bracket bolted to hull?

Thanks for any help!!!

I don't have an X Star, but I don't think you should have to remove the rudder. On my X2, you have to turn the rudder all the way to one side, kind of turn and angle the prop to get it past the rudder. It is a very tight fit and only goes on/off one way. My Prop is a 14.75X15.5.

Just thought of one other option, if the above does not work, and I think it should! Before you remove the rudder you can disconnect the shaft at the transmission connection (4 Bolts) and slide it out a bit to give you room to pull the prop past the rudder.

good lord 14.75x13? how much ballast are you running?

I've also never heard of a 14.75x14.75 factory prop..

On some X-stars you can change the prop with removing the rudder. On my '05 for some reason there is not enough clearance so I have to take the rudder off.
Put a jack under rudder so it doesn't hit the ground.
Remove cotter pin and then remove pinch bolt that holds the steering arm to the rudder.
Lower jack and remove rudder. Make sure the key is in the slot when you put the rudder back in after changing the prop.

Are those prop numbers correct? I run 2 different OJ props....14.75 X 15.5 most of the time and a 14.25 X 14.5 when I need a little extra pulling power for heavier ballast. I have the MCX in mine.

I did the same prop change several years ago on my 08 X-star. You do not need to remove the rudder. BUT, you must rotate the prop and rudder just right to remove the prop. I do not remember the position of the rudder and prop that worked, but I remember it was a combination that was not intuitive.

I am sorry. Factory is 14.75x15.5. I am factory ballast plus full fat sac system plus two more sacs in floor.

Hi, did the 14.75*13 do the job??? Looking at the same change on a 07 400 xstar. Won't get on the plane ATM with the 14.5*14.25.
