Went and bought a big daddy for big guys and pulled my hamstring the 2nd time trying to get up. So I guess thats says I am done for a few months. Any one else out here ever pulled that stunt?

My dad did that last year, though he didn't pull it he tore it. Had to have surgery and several months recovery. no fun.

Years ago I pulled a hammy....A friend's kid with a J-Craft (light fast boat) that had a 225HP Yamaha outboard just had to show me all the hole shot that he could muster.

One thing that I can tell you, is that once it is feeling better, wait a little longer than you think...re-injured mine trying to get back too early.

In fact, when you do come back, get up on two, and drop a ski for a little while.

Never pulled a hamstring on myself skiing, but have had 3 occur on people behind my boat. One on a set of combos, one on a slalom and the other on a wake surfer. All 3 of these were on older folks that haven't skied for several years or were trying something new. It's a long recovery time, usually 3-6 months. Good luck.

A friend of mine tore tendons right off his pelvis last year. It was early, he went first, and later thought the injury may have been prevented with a good warm-up/stretch. He had surgery and four months off work to recover.

Have a doctor friend who thought he'd be cool and try skiing on one 2 summers ago, he hadn't been on a ski for years. His first try up and he tears a hamstring. He passed out once we got him into the boat. We thought he had some internal bleeding so...3 hours later we left the local E.R.

That was a very short day!

I had 2 summers in a row where I fractured the same 3 ribs on the left front from bad crashes on a slalom. Getting old sucks!

As we get older it's really important to work out in the off season. I'm 49 and was in great shape this winter until I started to have problems with tendonitis in one of my shoulders (long story). Doctor said it shouldn't require surgery but I needed to rest the shoulder. I stayed out of the weight room for 3 months and when spring rolled around I only skied on trick skis, combos, and some lite wakeboarding. A few weeks ago I felt good enough to try my slalom ski. I was just about to get on top of the water and I felt my lower back tighten up. Made a few cuts and decided to let go. My back is doing better but I won't try that again until I've been back in the weight room some more. I ALWAYS STRETCH ON THE DOCK BEFORE I SKI!!!!

I agree. Getting old sucks.

Stretching before exercise is not necessarily shown to prevent such injuries, and is potentially harmful. At least two peer-reviewed studies have concluded that it can actually increase the risk of injury. This was also the conclusion of the CDC based on an extensive literature review.

Getting old sucks.

That I agree with.

Proper stretching should occur only after the muscles are warm. Unfortunately, 12oz curls don't count. :-(

Crap, I've been doing it wrong for years then. There goes my whole work out plan.

At my age I just try to use some common sense. At the gym I do cardio, stretching, weights, then cardio again. I will not just walk in the door and start grabbing weights.

At the lake I swim at the dock for a few minutes and then stretch before getting in the boat. I'm not skiing a course all day long and we always take a dip when we get back to the dock. I remember the days when I could jump out of the truck and get behind the boat but those days are long gone.
