View Full Version : Alpine/Kicker system going in this weekend!

Alright! I finally have all of my equipment and I couldnt be more excited!

For starters I went with Alpines CDA 188M (http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/cda-118m/)

I have always been an Alpine fan and the fact that my X10 has a 1.5 din HU slot on the dash made this a no-brainer! I also wanted bow, and transom remotes but didnt want to cut into the boat. Alpine offers a waterproof bluetooth remote that can be used up to 50 feet away. I purchased 3 and will place one on the bow, one on the transom, and one will be sucured to my riders board shorts. This way the rider can dial in the volume on the tower speakers to his or her liking. The rider can scroll through songs as well. This head unit also controls multiple zones separately so I can dial in the tower volume separate from the cabin speakers, and easily turn them on and off. I also added Serious Radio modules.

For amps and speakers I went through my good friend at Slangin Car Audio here in Phoenix for a complete Kicker system!

A ZX1000.1 will drive 1 10" Kicker L7 Solobaric in a sealed downfiring box behind the observers seat. Depending on the sound, I may end up slotting the fiberglass in the walkway to let the sound out..... We'll see. I would hate to do that. I was going to put the sub under the dash but we simply didnt have the room without cutting out all of my leg room.

For the cabin I went with Kickers ZX650.4 to power 2 pairs of Kicker KM6200 marine co-axial speakers.

For the tower, another ZX650.4 to power Kickers KMT60's (http://www.kicker.com/kmt60)

And to power it all, 2 brand new Optima blue top batteries!

I'm so excited I could chit myself! lol

I will post pics and updates throughout the weekend!

nice. Not sure what distance you ride at, but 50ft range would still be missing 25 ft for me. Also, id imagine one hard fall and there goes the remote.

How come co-axial speakers and not components. I have not heard the 6200 but im wondering if you will drown them out with the bass from the sub.

I also see the tower speakers keep claiming 50ft?? Seems a bit odd as they are targeting wakeboarders.

Keep the pictures coming!

Where are you mounting the amps? How are you connecting the batteries? Isolator?

The remotes cost me $36. If one breaks from a fall, oh well.

Kicker claims you can "live loud" at 50 feet. Perhaps they should have said, audible up to 75. I read all the reviews I could find from wake boarders and they all seemed to be impressed with this speaker set.

I find it funny that on the link Kicker calls the tower a "roll bar" lol

With any luck all three amps will fit side by side on the front side of the speaker box. Crossing fingers on that one...... And I didnt want to go with components due to having to put holes in the boat to mount the tweeters. Kinda thinking I will take the system with me when I upgrade boats...... The vent, or port that I might put in the walkway will be very subtle and hopefully look reletively OEM....

That's sweet! I am waiting on my all kicker gear to come in next week, didn't go as hardcore as you but I will have:

ZXM700.5 powering 4 x 6200's and a sub (10" Pioneer Premier that I had already)
ZXM350.4 powering 2 x KMT60's

I was going to go with regular Kicker amps but went with the Marine stuff, it was really really cheap (30% below dealer cost) so no biggie if I have to upgrade.

Will be interesting to see what you think of the sound on the KMT60's with 325W @ 4ohm compared to me with only 175W.

I also went with the co-ax because on my 99 PS205 it would have been a pain to install tweeters so this keeps it more factory.

I went and got some silver vinyl that matches the "x series" dash and will stick it down under the headunit to cover the screw holes!

Well, I'm not thrilled with my temporary fix. I guess it will work for now. I'm going to have my friend waterjet me a piece of aluminum or carbon fiber for a backing plate in the next few weeks......

Its been a long weekend! Finally 95% done!

I'm 100% satisfied with the highs and tower speakers. They're insanely loud! However, not so wild about the subwoofer location. With the observer seat opem, this thing rocks. Crazy loud. With the seat closed it muffles the sound and just shakes the boat. Not a lot of audible bass. In the weeks to come, I will move it around and reevaluate what I want to do with it. All in all I'm pretty damn happy!

You need the clarion retrofit plate, it will cover the whole area and allow the alpine to fit perfectly...
I did the same in my boat

Why didn't you go with the MC20? Looks more like it was designed for your application.

I love that the headunit can control volumes separately.

Got any other pictures of the boat?

In response to your sub placement, have you thought about putting it in the boat like this? I'd worry about my kids kicking it and spilling on it, but this boat was done really well, and it even added two cup holders...

I didnt want to cut holes in the boat. These remotes will be placed on the transom area and bow. One in my board shorts! Last weekend I was dialing in the sounds while on a surfboard!

I will try that with my box to see how it sounds. I kind of value my walkway though....... I also do not have a bow filler cushion....

Can't you just put it under the dash?

I could, but I'm partial to my leg room and dont want to shake the crap out of the gauges. The way it is, its already separated the gauge face from the housing on the speedometer....

I just put a sub box in my 99 PS205, it's a 1 cubic foot square box, I was able to remove the kick panel under the dash and put the box back there and re-install the kick panel in it's original location so I am not losing any space at all.

Not sure how different it is on your boat though? Also your box is likely larger for that sub so that might not work.

I Also have a heater box and a big hump on the floor making things difficult. I may try it one more time.....

Do you happen to have a video of these tower speakers in action? If not, could you possibly take one?? I was thinking about going with the same set-up on my tower, and i just wanted to see how it sounds

i would also like to see a vid of the tower speakers and also i run to 15 inch kickers in the bow of my boat now, but before i ran into the same problem u did about muffled bass when i had wet sounds subs and it only was load if the cabin doors/front hatch were open

Nice Job.

Any pics of the amp board install?

How did you attach the amp board to the side of hull inside?

I am also looking at optimum sub box placement in closed bow...

Nice Job.

I am also looking at optimum sub box placement in closed bow...For a 10" sub in a sealed box, you need 0.75 cu ft (12" x 14" x 9"). This will fit nicely under the driver's side in front of (forward) the foot rest firing straight back toward the passenger cabin. You'll need to tie-wrap a few cables in an adjacent location but the box will fit in there. Easier when you remove the kick panel next to your left leg and install with that out.

Amp will go on the kick panel (of your 91) but it is a bit flimsy so I used the kick panel as a template and cut a 3/4" plyboard to fit. Fiberglass resin to waterproof it. Reinstall after you have your sub box installed. Done deal.

^ Yes. Only problem is my 4 year old boy will be with me. Perhaps I'll leave him on the dock with the camera man........

Amp rack is screwed into the back side of rub rail, and "L" bracketed to the floor on bottom.....

It's funny, when I read posts like these I get all excited about upgrading my system. I currently have a 10" memphis sub and amp with 2 6.5' cans on the tower and 4 6.5" in the boat with an old cd/sat head unit. But then I think about how I actually use the radio: we don't hang out in party cove or even anchor much, and I know I would just tune it out in my head when slalom skiing, and I'm always turning it down when I'm trying to talk to the kid in the water or on the swim platform. But it would be nice to be able to hear it clearly when I'm driving and someone else is skiiing, or we are driving the 30miles to the place we will be parking the houseboat at lake powell.

That being said, I guess I'm like a lot of men, even though I wouldn't turn it up very often, I'd like to know I could if I wanted to.

I know you are happy with the sub. Just put a 12 inch L7 in our 84 S&S this weekend. It is in a ported box and driven by an MTX amp. The port points out from under the drivers dash right at your business. The system sounds fantastic in the driveway. Cant wait to get it on the water and jam some tunes while giving someone a pull through the course.

There's an amp rack there. Essentially a wood board, covered in carpet and screwed into the back of the rub rail. L-brackets mount the bottom to the floor.....

Is that a capacitor I see there? How big did you go? How are the optima batteries working out. I went with the mb quart onyx4 125 per ch and a 600.1 mono for sub. That should give me 250 watts for the kt 60 towers I bought

Brian B
04-24-2012, 06:07 PM
I believe its a 1 farad cap...... Optimas work great! I play the stereo all I want and simply switch between batteries a few times daily to charge them. Periodically, I will put them on a trickle charger in storage.....

I wanted to mention that the Alpine bluetooth remotes arent really waterproof. I had one on my shorts while surfing last weekend. It got water logged and got stuck onto + volume . I hope I didnt damage my speakers. Took a few minutes to get it shut off........ Very upsetting..
