Last year I unloaded my 94 ps 190 and picked up a 04 ps 190 tt, the thing has no radio, speakers, amp, nothing, any suggestions for tunes that won't break the bank.

Alpine 9886M is a great head unit and I've had it for about 2 years now. Much nicer than my older Clarion. I don't have an amp but it drives the speakers much better than the Clarion ever did. If you want amps, JL Audio or Alpine marine grade.

There is also one level up from the 9887m head unit that has a screen on it. About $50 more.

He said don't break the bank ;)

Here is a cheap system i have found to be very nice:

Sony CDX-HS70MW - $129 (got mine at bestbuy)
Sony XM-604M - $199 (from bestbuy)

With that headunit, you can run 4 speakers and a sub (4 speakers running off channel 1 + 2 as they are 2 ohm stable) and a sub running off chan 3 + 4 bridged. Or you can run 4 speakers off each channel individually. As for speakers in the boat, are there cut outs? Do you have a certain size limitation?

I know.....some people's "bank" is larger than others. :) I saw 2004 era boat so thought mmmm......maybe.

A friend of mine just asked the same question to me a few days ago in an email. Gave him the same suggestion and his response....yea, a little cheaper please.

He was looking at the Kenwood and Sony. Based on the reviews from Crutchfield, it looks like the Sony is a better head unit than the Kenwood. I think these were around $150 or so.

Do either one of the Sony's have a decent iPod cable/interface? Do they charge the iPod while plugged in? Just something to consider......

The sony i listed has aux in, which is just the red white cable. I prefer this method as i like the interface on the iphone better than any headunit. They is a dongle you can purchase to make the headunit control the ipod though. The sony unit only has 2 sets of pre outs Front and REAR / Sub but with that sony amp it doesn't matter.

The driver side remote for the sony is nice, and cheaper than the clarion, plus it comes with the extended wire.

have no cut outs, but plan on using stock locations, each side of boat at the rear seat location and maybe 2 in front mounted in side pannel

Well depending on price, speakers range.

I have the JL 770m in my X1 and they sound great, but they are expensive. In my old prostar i had some low end sony speakers which sounded just fine, i think they were $60 - $100 a pair. The amp will only be pussying 30 - 60watts rms depending how you have i wired up, so look for speakers in that range.

I have the Alpine or Infinity speakers (can't remember) for around $120 a pair. Sound good enough for me.

How about some pictures of the new 2004 190TT? Ski behind it and tell me what you think of the wake and bump compaired to your old 1994 190. The 197 I skied, the bump felt a little harder, but was a little smaller too.

What do you listen to the most? CDs? Ipod? xm/sirius? any other mp3? if you primarily listen to an Ipod, I love my alpine IDa-x100m. it does not have a cd player, but its ipod control is the best ive seen. i purchased mine through bethel marine electronics for $270 last year. it is easily expandable if you want to add on later-xm/sirius, hd radio, keychain remote, installed remotes, etc. it has built in power, but also 3 sets of pre outs to get an amp later. dont go so cheap you will regret it in a year when you are re-buying everything you really want.

I got 4 Polk DB651 "marine grade" speakers from Crutchfield on sale for $100 w/ shipping last year. I think they run that $50 a pair pretty regularly. I don't think you can beat them for the price.

I'm still in the market for a replacement receiver though. My factory Clarion one works but is only 35 watts and no aux input. I could get a 6 channel amp and an EQ but not sure I want to get that far into it.

Interesting....I didn't know that one did not have a CD player.

Robin still makes a good point. When I first got our 94' 205, I got a "decent" clarion head unit. After about a year, I realized it was very difficult to navigate with the Ipod and a little frustrating. I have a very similar Alpine unit in my Suburban so I replaced the "new Clarion" with the Alpine 9886m unit.

What I found out was the Alpine unit drove the speakers much better than the Clarion and the sound quality improved as well. Hence, do it right the first time.

driving speakers off the headunit is not doing it right the first time though...

Staying in budget is though. I don't want to have a TON of money in there when it's so open to the elements (and thieves). I'm pleased with the results for us.

That depends on your wants/needs. I've experienced multi thousand dollar systems and I'm perfectly happy (Accept for the lack of aux input) with my in boat DB651 Polk speakers being powered by a measly 35x4 factory Clarion CD player. I have another 4 DB651s on the tower powered by a 200 watt amp and I'm happy with that too. All that I want now is a 10" subwoofer and I will call it done.

Also, even if he has long term goals of more power it's not going to hurt anything to wire them up to the receiver now and then reroute to an amp in a season or two when the budget permits.

Then i suggest getting that sony amp i posted. You can find it for sub $200 online, and it will power all 4 of your speakers and a sub. (assuming you speakers are 4ohms each)

If you have a dry place no need for a marine grade amp IMO

depends also where you live. I live in FL and the humidity will destroy a non marine amp in a boat.

Skied behind it last year a few times, and your right about the bump, still nicer than my old one I would say.
