Took my Dad (retired Navy) to see the Blue Angels this past Saturday at our local airport. Our small airport was not prepared to handle the 10,000+ people that showed up and most of the day was a nightmare. We had to watch 5 hours of smaller planes and sky divers before seeing the Blue Angelsí 30-minute program. It was a mad dash to the shuttle buses and they had to call in extra police to keep everyone in control when it was over. We waited two hours on the black asphalt in 90-degree temps to catch a bus and the older people were passing out by the handful; My Dad was one of them. It was a once in a lifetime event and Iím glad my Dad and I got to see them, but I will never do it again!
Thought Iíd share some pictures.

Their skills were very impressive, but one Top Fuel dragster (8000 HP) was louder than all six jets!! Of course they weren't allow to fly faster than about 500 MPH at our airport.

They were here the weekend before. Practice just above my home. Great to watch. Very cool for sure.

The Thunderbirds have been practicing around the Air Force Academy yesterday and today. I think they will be performing tomorrow at their graduation.

Had my window rolled down yesterday as two of them flew overhead......I thought my front wheel was going to fall off b/c I didn't know what that loud, rumble sound was! Whew....it was only airplanes above. :)

Albert wasn't brought out until after the airshow. We were told that they were working on mechanical issues. I think the JAtO is mostly for show because Albert did the exact same thing without them....it was very cool to watch. They brought the plane off the runway very quickly and shot up at a 45 degree angle and then flattened out right before it stalled. That monster has got some power.

it's amazing what the JATO will make a prop job do

I've never seen the Blue Angels but will soon

It looked to me that the C-130 performed the same without the JATO. It seemed like they let the plane almost stall before bringing the nose back to level (More stall than what was in the video with the JATO. It was cool.

I just checked into NAS Pensacola for flight training. I start IFS (initial flight screening) (read flying around in a Piper/Cessna to ensure you got the gonads and stomach for the gig) in about 10 days.

Having been in the Navy for 12 years now and a prior recruiter, what they do never ceases to amaze me.

No Aviation Like Naval Aviation!
5,280 ft of runway is a waste of useable space!

Don, exactly. If you can't land in lass than 500', then you're doing something wrong! :)

Apparently, they did some non-sense while they weree in VA last week awt your show. Because they were supposed to be here this week for the Naval Academy Graduation but were grounded in Pensacola for extra training in the wake of the VA show.

You are correct. On Saturday they flew a slow banking 4 plane formation over the crowd that was so low I could have hit them with a rock. I sat there with my mouth wide open because I didn't have my camera ready. I heard they did another low pass on Sunday and they were forced to cut the show short.

My Dad laughed and told me that when he was on base in the Navy that Air Force guys would fly in and land half way down the runway and then pull a chute. The Navy guys would fly in and drop the plane down 10 feet from the beginning of the runway. Just repeated what my Dad said.

Use of 5,280 feet of runway shows a complete lack of confidence!!

While I was away at Military School in Harlingen as a kid, we had a parade right around the time of the CAF airshow and the Angels flew over our parade. It was a kickass feeling...

Back in 2003, I took a vacation in Pensacola and they had the Blue Angels come out and perform. My daughter was about 5 or so, she called them "The Blue Ferries"

I have seen the Blues perform on many occasions. I have had the opportunity to work with them at the SEA AND AIR show in Ft Lauderdale not to long ago. As the group I was with was responsible to the SEA portion of the show. What a great group of folks to be associated with. All the standards where lowered over the water as the performed there "LOW SHOW" This year at a moments notice we went to SUN AND FUN in Lakeland. Instead of going into the event we parked outside the back entrance to the show. WOW...What a vantage point. You could easliy see the pilots visors as they where that low. This quick video was shot mid show. It does not even begin to show how close we really where. You could smell the jet fuel on many a pass

I know its pain to wait...but worth it. The RAPTOR is even better, louder and bigger

I'll have to admit that they were VERY low on Saturday. Seems they would have corrected the issue before doing it again on Sunday which leads to all of this.

The most important thing here is that you had a good time with your Dad. Treasure these times.

I got my wings in 1981

Then I pinned my wings on my son in 2006.

I anchor the mastercraft near the end of the runway at NAS Jacksonville for a proper viewing of the blue angels.

Blackcreek, Thanks sir. @ 30yrs & 363 days old (I turn 31 on Wed), I am by far the oldest in my class. And being so old, the Navy, has said I am too old for pilot, so I'll be a double anchor 'FO.

I haven't watched the blues from the water yet. I did watch last year at the new hanger just inside the gate. We were right where they'd turn up and out. My 5 year old son loved it!

Sorry to read about the long ordeal / problem to see the Blue Angels. I have been watching them for decades over Lake Washington in Seattle. They fly for four days during the Seafair Festival over the lake. The festival includes days worth of Hydro plane boat races, plane exhibitions, parades, concerts, etc.
The best part is to watch the blue angels from the water. They fly right over the top of you. They are incredible machines!

Then maybe you will like this one too. I had posted this one in the Youtube thread a while back. I love the onboard video when the pilot is doing the "hick maneuver". Our air show was short and sweet and I think it was due to the large population around our airport, and the flight path to the airport goes directly over Liberty University.
