View Full Version : Leak thru steering rudder seals -Repair Kit?

I have had a slow water leak thru my rear rudder for the past 10 years in my '81 Stars & Stripes.
It had been tolerable but at the start at last season I decided to include this job amongst the normal reg maintanance. Unfortunately it kept the boat out of the water for the remainder of last year due to availability of a seal kit.
Does anyone out there have fix for this?

Didn't they use the same seal packing as the stuffing box for the prop shaft back then?

....not sure about the seals for the prop shaft. It is a series of three plastic o-rings with metal lining.
Thanks I will check it out.

Interesting, could you post up some pictures? Somebody must have dealt with this before...

I have the same problem. If the packing won't fit in the rudder shaft, I was going to look at finding some o-rings to fit.

Finally got around to posting pics of the worn out O rings. Tried a local shop to see if they had duplicates but no luck as of yet.
How can I post pics on this thread?

I have 80 and just took apart mine. It looks just like the stuffing box on shaft? It did look like there was rubber packed inside. Do I just replace it like the shaft stuffing box and what size is packing?

For the ones with orings. If it was me I would measure old orings if possible. Measure shaft and measure fitting. Trail and error with a good lubricate on everything. In my youth working on larger boat with packing glands on the rudder shafts we would cut the packing to length to go around the shaft. We would add as many layers as room allowed with the packing staggered where the ends meet themselves. Out the boat in the water and tighten the packing gland nut till we had a very slow drip.

my 81 has standard packing, same as the drive shaft packing

Thank you both so much. I bought some 3/16" to redo prop shaft and I am going to try it on rudder. This forum has been so great to me so far. I now need to figure out how to remove shaft and strut?
