Has anyone repaired the fiberglass under the rear sun platform on a 90's era boat? I have a vertical crack under the sun platform and behind the backrest. It looks like very thin fiberglass but supports a lot of weight. I am not as much worried about it looking nice as much as being it being structurally sound.

I just bought a six foot 1.5" x 1/8" aluminum strap at the hardware store that I will be mounting to the back side of that spot. I plan on screwing it to the fiberglass in about 5 locations with stainless steel machine screws.

The previous owner of my boat was a D-1 offensive lineman, so I don't blame it for cracking.

Here are some photos of my repair. I bought a piece of 1/8" x 1.5" aluminum 8' long. I cut it to length to fit all the way across the back. I added the leftover piece of aluminum to the center section for double thickness.

I felt around under the lip and found several places that were thicker and used those as the screw locations as well as one on each side of the crack about 2" away. After a test fit with several clamps I marked my hole locations in the fiberglass and drilled one of the middle ones. I then bolted it together and moved on to the next one. I used oval head bolts with a slight countersink, but i think pan head would have worked just as well.

Make sure the holes you are drilling are a very snug fit for your bolt. The less slop you have, the less your deck will flex.

It worked great and the crack doesn't move at all when I sit (200#) directly on top of it.
(Yes, I vacuumed up the drill tailings)
