Anything thats compatible with dex/merc II will be fine, some people run motor oil if the transmission is noisy. II is not really available anymore; so your answer is yes Royal purple Max ATF will work without any problems.

I know in our new x55 they want us using 15w40 for the Tranny. I thought...weird...

2005 Maristar 210 VRS with MCX has 15W-40 in transmission. Kind of cool, only one fluid to keep handy.

Hey, you learn some thing new every day. I didn't know a transmission would work the same with motor oil, I always thought the two had completely different properties. I was just looking at my manual for my 95 because I'm going to change my transmission fluid and it said to use "Dex II, III or Dex/Merc".

The 15W40 is recommended for the newer v-drives and, possibly (IIRC) the gear reduced transmissions. In the older boats, use Dexron/Mercon III, IV or whatever the current standard is.

Yup, I'm stinking with ATF in mine. If I use motor oil it may start to slip! :D

This brings up an interesting point. My transmission currently has Pennzoil Marine 15w40 in it, boat is an 06 X2. I changed my oil yesterday and put in Rotella 15w40 in the engine, could I put the Rotella in the transmission too or should I stick with the Pennzoil?
