Hi guys,

my X-star trailer seems to leak oil from one hub.

I think it is from the plastic see through window so to speak.

Does anyone know how to seal it?

Also is CAstrol EPX 80W-90 a good oil to use in them - I used it in LandCruiser Rear diff before and found on forum 75w90 or 80w90 should be good.

Also how do you seal the plastic see-thro window and with what?

Does anyone know if my hub is screw on or push on and how to remove it properly?

I read the hub removal thread but dont want to damage it

Please help

They should be a screw on. Mine leaked as well but I do have an 07 X2. A quick fix and this was from Mastercraft was to use transmission oil to fill it until its fixed. Just go buy a new one, they are not expensive. But take the tire off and screw it off. You will need a wrench.

I had an 03 trailer and it did the same thing leaking from plastic wheel cap. there was a problem with that design and mastercraft replaced mine with aluminum caps . your dealer can get them for you.

It looks like push on, no place to put a wrench unless its some magic wrench.

I used Catrol trans oil 80w 90 mineral epx - was told by castrol rep its good

I had the tire off, clean it all out and ****, had the boat in the water and its still leaking - need to replace it or re-seal it - the plastic

would you recommend resealing

no mastercraft dealer in Queensland man :(((

most of the stuff have to ship from US and want to use the boat ;))

Go to the hardware store and get a rubber cap that is made for capping plumbing vent lines (2" I think), has a hose clamp on it. Take the bad cap off, put the wheel back on and then install teh rubber cap over the hub and crank down the hose clamp. WOrks great, put 500mi on my 06 trailer like that until I got a new cap. Will have to estimate how much oil to put in, no sight glass, but that's easy.
Yes gear lube will work fine, better than the thin 50wt reccomended IMO. Think I'm running 75W140 in mine now.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. My one still holds a bit of oil in it and I top it before I go to the river but wd rather had it replaced. also thought about just trying to re-seal the plastic window with sikoflex - the stuff used to fit the rear mat.... any thoughts on that?

Never heard of the stuff. Have sika flex here, but that's a caulk. I'm interested in what you're using to hold down the rubber mats on the swim deck and fenders. I'm on my 2nd application of 3M high strength spray adhesive (fancy rubber cement). DOesn't seem to last long before peeling up. I'm sure you could doctor it up from leaking with some good epoxy, glue, JB weld, etc. Maybe take it apart and run a bead of adhesive around the inside egde.
FWIW while you have everything apart, grease or anti seize the brake caliper bolts, drain plug on the hub and the wheel lugs, then do the other wheels as well. All that stuff will rust on solid and you'l have snapped bolts next time it comes apart.
That rubber cap worked awesome btw, no water intrusion or leaking whatsoever. Had it on the trailer for a couple months until I got new caps.

Hey guys, followed the photo school and managed to take the cap off, cleaned it with white spirit, sealed it wit loctite sealant, drilled out and taped bigger hole in it, got a stainless cap to fit and will be fitting it in as we speak.

For rear mat - its sikoflex at this part of the world or better - get a teak platform and forget about all the rubbish with rubber. not sure

Preparations - hub fitted with cap and sealed with loctite on the outside, inside to the window and the outer collar which goes in the hub:

After 24 hours waiting for the seal to catch Cap fitted, sealed and filled with oil, had to drill bigger hole and taped the hole for 12mm plug - this needs to be sealed with loctite too as the whole seems slightly on the large site

And a Close up of all

If anyone has some comments on my work (i am not a mechanic) please DO enlighten me. I would appreciate it!

If it holds oil without leaking then you're a mechanic! That's my comment.
Also, look at all that rust on the caliper. Would be worth your time to take the brakes apart and grease or anti sieze the caliper slides/bushings/bolt threads. Also do the lug nuts before they rust on too.

Thanks mate, it seems to be holding the oil - cannot notice any leaks or anything apart from the oil getting a bit less clear - not milky but slightly unclear. Would you advise to change it - there was probably some old oil with water inside and hence the colour.

I am ordering the kit anyhow - apparently they discountinued it so if I dont buy it now I will have to change the hubs, ups.

How would you do the rest you suggested and what sort of grease I would need to use.

Is there any tech issues that I should be aware of after I dismantle it that will be tricky to put back or require some spec tools.

Thanks for your comments mate, I have just retrofitted bosch pump in the fuel tank as well - 4 days it took and still a bit worried as needed to change the hose from the red one to normal fuel one and fitted the filter in between - heaps of messing about so fuel would not leak from the connections.
