Need a back up copy of a boat key. Can I get a copy made at any key shop or do I need to go through Mastercraft or a boat store?

On the '91 Prostar I had, I looked at getting a copy of a key made but I could not find anyone in town that had a key that was close. My key had two grooves on one side that made it different than a lot of keys. I was told at the time I would probably have to contact Mastercraft. Hope this helps.

I have a 2001 Maristar and the dealer told me that I needed to buy a new lock unit with new keys. For some reason they couldn't provide me with just a spare key. Not sure if you will have the same issue with your Maristar.

I was under the impression that a dealer could get you a replacement just by the HIN. I've heard that there are only a handful of keys, not sure if that is true.

Hmmm. If it was me, I'd go down to the local lock shop and ask them. :)

I am thinking that a 90 still has a relative generic ignition switch. Before you go spend too much money, realize you can buy a new ignition switch with 2 keys for less than $25.00.

Home depot and lowes looked at me like I was crazy. If you find a solution let me know. Something scary about having just 1 key

Don't go to a hardware store, go to a lock shop where they know what they're talking about.

I got a few spares made for my boat at the local ACE Hardware. They had the key blanks in stock and cut them no problem.

Tired the local dealer here and no luck. ACE hardware is the place. The big box stores are not help either. I had mine made and they wrote the blank down on the envelope for future because it is not a common key at the hardware either. I think I paid $1.87.

I believe the number I heard was only 3 key combinations, at least back in the early 90s. I sols my old keys that had the 25th Anniv. Key Cap on them and the new owner said the key was a match for his 93.

I believe they are like golf cart keys. You have a 1 and 3 shot of it working. I would go to a lock smith.

I have a 91 190 and was told I had to replace the ignition also. I took apart an old key found out it's a Cole Hersee key blank # 83379. I bought a couple blanks direct from them and cut them myself. if you don't have a key cutter I'm sure any hardware store will cut your blank for you.

Don't know about the older boats, but I learned recently on the newer boats there is a letter code on the left of the ignition switch. Letter corresponds to the key you need.....

Your ignition switch probably has the same letter. I have all the letters. What's your address? :)

I had a spare made at Home Depot a few years back. The blank they used was for a cabinet. Key works fine.

Was for a '98 PS 205

I need a spare for my 2008 X-15. Has anyone had any problems getting a copy that has a newer X-series boat? I plan on hitting up the local ACE Hardware tomorrow........

Just got one made for my 04 prostar this weekend. The guy at Ace wasn't 100% confident in the blank and the cut so he gave it to me for free. Works just fine. Blank was an ilco if I recall.

A dealer should have them . My wife lost our key one day, I was about to kill her because it was my only key. I went to the dealer expecting to have to change out the ignition but they came out looked at the letter on my ignition and handed me two new keys with floaters on them and kill switch lanyards. They said their are only 3 keys for mastercraft and they always have them in stock.

that's kinda scarey!!! especially for anyone that leaves their boat in a slip...

Has anyone had the bright idea to change ignitions to push button? I think it would be kinda cool!

Thought about it when I switched out all the switches, ign, horn button, fuse box, etc.... Key to turn the ign on and a push button for the start, but didnt want to drill another hole in the orig dash.... (78 S&S)

Well I still have the spare keys for my '05 and '08. (Forgot to give them to Mike when I traded in each time) And neither match my '09. What are the chances that if there are only 3 keys that I got one of each?

I'm no statistician. But you either do or you don't. What's that? 50/50? ;)

No problem! For my '04 X-2, the key blank was a HY-KO Y14 if that helps at all.

There are 4 keys.They are indicated with the letters a b c and d.
You can order the keys true a dealer and they cost about 20 dollars each.

UPDATE!

I went to ACE Hardware yesterday after work and was able to get 2 copies made of my 2008 MC X-15 key. They had to look around a bit and compare my key to the 100s that they had in stock but eventually found the match. I tested the key on the boat right afterwards and it worked, no problem!

Best $4.00 I've ever spent! LOL

p=n/N

where "P" equals probability
where "n" equals number of favorable cases (matches)
where "N" equals number of number of total cases

In the case of 3 total keys (total cases) and 1 favorable match, the P would be 33%.

In the case of odds, I think it would be expressed as 2:1 as odds are usually expressed as the chances against something happening.

Awesome post. I went to ACE. My old (only) key to 94 PS 205 is old, discolored, has no markings and is slightly bent- luckily somebody on the forum had posted that the blank for his 04 was HY-KO Y14. My boat is a decade older, but sure enough, it was the right blank! The guy thought I was nuts that I was looking at my iPhone at the store! Thanks TeamTalk!

Y-14 blank worked perfect in my boat (07 X1). Just picked one up yesterday, planning on going back for another. It was $2.44. Ended up going to Bee's Keys in Dallas.

Tried Elliott's Hardware first and I picked the Y-14 out all of their key blanks, but the lady working the key machine said it wouldn't work and told me about Bee's Keys. Went to be Bee's Keys and the girl there made me a key in about 1 minute with the Y-14 blank and wasn't going to charge me. She said I could try it out to see if worked and then come back later and pay if it did. I went ahead and paid her. I'll definitely go back to Bee's Keys and get another key.
