Went out today and the engine started to over heat- about 220. A little smoke and smell went with it. Went back in very slowly and luckily we were close. After the boat was pulled out of the water we found a lot of water in the bilge and engine compartment. Could it be that the water pump was pulling water but not getting it into the cooling system? What now?

Very likely that the raw water pump was not doing its job for some reason, better remove the cover and look at the impeller.

Yup, likely the impellar has chewed up its blades. It could have melted the exhaust hose that runs from the risers to the exhaust. When those get holes, water will definitely enter the hull.
