My 85 PS appears to have a rudder out of alignment. Maybe someone can confirm this or maybe its normal. When turning right the wheel stops and the arm off the rudder hits or is flush with the transome, whether the transome is stopping the rotation or the steering wheel is i am not sure. the turn to the left has far more rudder rotation than to the right. I am viewing all this on land with gas tank out and floor cover off so i can see the travel of the rudder and arm. The arm appears to be splined. MC dealer says i should be able to turn shaper right than left yet the rudder travel says otherwise. Is it out of ailgnment or not, and if it is can i adjust the alignment by moving the arm on the spline or some other why. I wish i could find fiche of the steering system and see how this all works together.

I think it turns farther to the left to counteract the left hand turn of the prop, which causes the boat to want to yaw to the right when underway. Theoretically, you shouldn't need as much rudder to turn right. Just a guess though.

......Is it out of ailgnment or not, and if it is can i adjust the alignment by moving the arm on the spline or some other why. In my opinion and experience, it is not out of alignment or adjustment. I personally would'nt fix anything if it isn't broken. Where I would look for some misalignment of components is while in operation and the boat is tracking in a straight line. look at the steering wheel position. Is it in proper position for a straight line? If it is, I'd leave well enough alone. The adjustments and such are for installation / tweaking. I wouldn't rely on the adjustment points to serve as an analysis point and alignment fix.

Just two more pennies though to represent an opinion. With time comes experience. I've been fooling with the older boats quite a few years now.... ;)

You will see a harder right turn, which means the rudder is actually pointing (turning) farther to the left to steer the rear of the boat in the right hand direction. It's all about the direction of rotation.

And leave reverse alone... Don't go there... :uglyhamme :uglyhamme

Discuss.
