So i think i need to replace my headunit, does anyone know if the CMD5 and CMD4 are easily swappable. They dont make the CMD4 and i cant find it on ebay or anything. Will i have to re wire the harness or could i just plug the existing one in to the CMD5

If you are going to upgrade I would go for the CMD6

Are they all the same? Im really looking for an easy switch out, and not having to splice the wires again ... i havent looked but it seems like the hardness can be pulled out of the CMD4?

I did the same thing to my boat last year. The wiring harnesses are the exact same. No re-splicing needed.

get the Alpine CDA-118. much better quality deck, with better features, remote is RF.

I think the alpine will be about the same price as a CMD7. I bought a CDA-118 online from a company called techronics $350 for head unit and got the remote off ebay for $150. I like it because it has separate in-boat (front and rear), tower and subwoofer preouts. thats 8 channels of preouts. that way you can control the volume of each speaker pair independant of one another. It also has subwoofer volume control on the remote which i liked. both these units have only 2volt outputs which is adequate. both seem to have ipod and sat radio, USB functionality.

yea the 2v is killing me, coming from 4v in most of my applications. The clarions is $399 locally (im kinda wanting to buy one today) and has 4 channels of pre outs, so technically i should be able to lower the tower speaker volume independently from the in boat speakers. I dont have an amp for my boat speakers and the only other upgrade i would do is maybe add a subwoofer and amp. I think the hassle of switchin to alpine might not be worth it for me

Sorry the Clarions CMD7 is $299 while the CMD6 *8channels pre out* is $399... at west marine...

Yeah, I did the 118m, it's really pretty sweet.

I had the CMD5 that came with my 06, that HU has soured me towards Clarion head units. Dont understand why they mated all that quality JL stuff with that low quality Clarion.

Another alternative is to just go buy a nice car type deck with all the features you want without the marine upgraded price. MC decks are mounted in the glove box so splash resistance is a mute point. almost all car decks are conformal coated as well. You will need a small trim piece ($10) to cover some of the holes where the old clarion was attached.

try to get something with 4volt preouts

i could always look at something double din for the car also, problem is my dad will be upset if it doesnt says "marine" on it lol ... funny thing is he lives 250miles away from the boat and im paying for it!! =P
