So the fuel gauge on the 06 x1 doesnt work. The sender unit looks brand new and has a stick on it saying 12/10 (Dec 2010 im assuming). But the gauge tried to move, ticked up like 2 lines then slowly drops back down... any ideas?

Not sure if it the same style, but in my 96 the magnets fell out of the float and was always reading empty. I had to take it out and epoxy the magnets back in and now it works great.

Check the connections. If they are good, take the wires off and touch them together and see what the gauge does. If it goes to full, the gauge is fine and is probably the sending unit. If nothing happens, the gauge or wires to the gauge are bad.

I will try that today

lots of fuel gauge threads. My gauge seems to have a mind of its own so i did the "gauge check" that is in my VDIG and showed gauges are fine. So then went to the top of the tank and unscrewed the strip that goes into the tank that looks to have chip sensors up and down the strip. I cleaned it off and reincerted it and screwed it back down. Now it works much better. Not 100% accurate but the fluctuations are now by 1/8 instead of by 3/4 of a tank.
