Ok,

Details that I know...

-20-30K price range, closer to 20 would be best.
-used is fine, low hours, great condition ect, dealer history a plus
-trailer/cover/ect included
-freshwater use
-Needs to be a family oriented boat
-No crazy wraps, funky options ect.
-8 to 10 people capacity most likely closer to 8.
-19 to 25ft range
-skiing, tubing, wakeboarding basically the weekend warrior

I was thinking along the lines of a small X series boat or maybe a Maristar, but I am open to all suggestions. It would need to be a reliable, roomy boat with power to move it around correctly(no massive powerplant needed) and all the things that make a mastercraft what it is....the best boat for the job.

Lets here what you guys think, and if you have one for sale in the tristate area (IL, WI, MI) please PM details on what you have.

Thank you in advance!

Ive seen some 2000-2004 X stars for around the right price and the boat seems like the sort of boat he would be looking for. I just need to ask him what kind of skiing he is looking at doing, I am sure the kids are going to be tubing (sorry) and wakeboarding the most.

Keep the ideas coming!

I picked up an 06 X1 with high hours (800) but mechanically in good condition for right around $25 with some options... deals are out there. Check boattrader.com daily...

I would also contact your local MC dealer and have them keep an eye out for what you're looking for. They get boats in all the time and often never even list them because they sell them so quickly. That's what happened to me and how I got my boat.

Yes I want to help him find one at a dealer if possible, my biggest question here is what boat should I be helping him find that will fit his needs listed.

Thanks for the stuff so far.

2006 - 2011 / 2005-2004 / 2003 - 1999 X1 / X2 / Xstar seem to fit his needs.

The older X2/XStars are small inside. You -can- fit 8 adults on one (1 driver, 2 in the bow, 1 spotter, 1 mid ship, 3 on the bench) but it is very cramped. That said, it's a fantastic all-around boat.

X 10 would be perfect for his usees. Some of them under $30k.
2 years ago it seemed like everyone in Phoenix was dumping their X30s as well. Was a couple nice ones for less than 30k if he wants a boat that big.

I would not lock him into a dealer boat.

When I was looking for a newer boat a dealer had an 06 X30 with 850 hours and wanted 2.5k more then the same boat from a private party with only 84 hours on it.

Totally agree, only would like a dealer boat if the price was right for history reasons. I have never bought a used anything from a dealer yet and have no complaints.

I am thinking the maristar might be the boat for him since I dont think all the bells and whistles that the X series comes with appeal to his needs.

Not sure if I just missed it but you didn't say whether he was against a dd or not. If you were closer I'd say my boat. I just bought my 02 prostar 209 but work just became about 15% more financially enabling to a newer x series.

For that money he could get a really nice prostar

Earlier 209 might be the ticket too.
Maristars are generally cheaper than X boats because thay don't have the "image" pricetag.
Could likely get a Maristar model and throw a tower on it (if needed) for less than a comparable X boat.
Wanting to fit 8 people (adults) comfortably will push you past 190s and 205s.
Mid/late 90s efi Maristars could fit the bill and maybe for less than $20k.

I'm thinking a later model 205 would be a nice starter for what he wants. Dosent sounds like he needs a tower

The other dealer vs. private party factor can be taxes. In Louisiana you only pay sales tax on the agreed upon price of the trailer in a private party sale (Even if the boat came from out of state). No taxes on the boat itself. So, there are a lot of $50k+ boats with "$100" trailers under them here. I paid around $9 in sales tax last year when I bought my Maristar 230 from a lady in Florida.

With a sale through a licensed dealer you pay tax on the entire sale price (boat+trailer) whether used or new. On a $20k boat that adds up to around $1,800 in sales taxes that you wouldn't have had to pay in a private party sale.

Not sure if this is a factor in your state but it might be something to look into if you're unsure.

Far away but its seems to be a nice clean boat. Checked it out before I found mine. I think a 209 is a great boat overall if you are ok with DD. I looked at everything from 190's ---) X's and found it to be a great compromise for room and price. Plus if you find one optioned out not much diff in that and an X9 w/o the silly price tag problem.

I would check Ebay....

I think space would be the only thing hurting the 209. THe Vdrive I think is the best option for his needs right now.

X10 or Maristar would be my vote. Great all around boats. If you find any decent ones that are too pricey for you PM me. Not a lot of inventory in the midwest right now. I have a buddy looking for something very similar. He's willing to spend up to $35k.

as others have stated, the V-drive will offer more interior room over the DD (one of the reasons I moved to our '04 X2 from older S&S) ... it might be a challenge to find all criteria of price, low hours, space, great condition ... in the $20-30K range. But if you keep a close eye on Craigslist anywhere within driving distance over enough time, you will likely find a good deal that might require a little bit of elbow grease & $$$ to get set up to your (his) likings. Likewise, once you get it narrowed down to a couple of different models (x1/x2/xstar, maristar, x10, etc), someone here on TT might come across something to suit you too. patience is key!!! took me just over a year to find the right deal for us...

Agree with this. I have had Maristars for 10 years and overall you cant beat them. Very roomy and versatile.

Looks like the Maristar is the boat for him if he goes Mastercraft. I found one in Kansas that looks like a really clean well cared for boat.

We will see.
