Hey I am helping a buddy with a mercruiser alpha 1 I/O that needs a shift cable replaced.
Has anyone on here successfully completed this task?
If so any tips?
Thanks, the poor bastard should have known never buy a I/O= junk

I had a Bravo and I'm pretty sure you have to remove the outdrive to access that end of the cable. I would assume you dis-assemble the shifter to remove cable from that end, snake the old one out and snake the new one in. ?
Probably not a fun job. He should fix it and then trade it in on a new MC! :D

I did one on an old drive from the early 80's. Something like an 888 drive. All the merc's I've looked at seem pretty similar. The end of the cable at the motor end was just above the motor on the inside of the transom. It connected to a lever coming out of the inside plate that mounted the stern drive. The hard part is getting the old cable out of the boat and the new one in.
