View Full Version : First run with my Maristar and have a few questions

Just bought a new to me 99 Maristar 230. The main thing that concerns me is it sounds like the transmission is rattling when in gear at idle. Also it takes a second or two for the transmission to engage I noticed, especially when it warmed up.

Also when coming in I think I felt the prop hit something and it started to have a bad vibration so I immediately took it out of gear. Put it back in and it seemed like it still had a slight vibration to it. However when I got it out of the water I only saw one small ding on the prop (4 blade OJ), which didn't seem enough to warrent the vibration that I felt, and no other scratches on the hull or rutter. Could this possibly be related to the transmission questions above? I checked the fluid and it was full and very clean.

I have a spare prop that came with the boat that I am going to swap out, just wanted some opinions from the gurus. I had a Prostar for 5 years and knew that thing inside and out but this V-drive is going to take some getting used to.

Does the transmission have ATF or motor oil in it?

There was a recommendation to change to motor oil for the V-drive transmissions, to deal with customer complaints about rattling at idle. See:

I haven't noticed the second or two for transmission engagement; I'll pay attention if I ever get out of work this year and get the boat wet...

Relatively minor dings can cause unusual vibrations depending on what they do to the waterflow around the prop. Swap in the spare, see what happens. BTW, what size prop is your main/spare?
