When i bought my boat (1991 ps 190) it had a slight knock in the trans when i first put it in gear at low rpm's foward and revearse when it is out of the water, it did it this year when i dewinterised it too.It seemed to go away last summer. Is that normal? What can i check? Thanks everyone.

Just a guess but the damperplate could be starting to go? Ever been replaced yet? If not how many hours on the boat?

Like GT said, probably the damper plate. I would advise against putting the transmission in gear while out of the water on the trailer. Sure it's pretty dangerous and you are running the strut bearings while they are dry.

Would the same apply to a '79 S&S w/351W? I've noticed a knocking as well. Mine does this IN the water.

Knocking at low speed or in neutral is most always a damper plate.

Do you know which plate I would need for the '79? I am seeing ones with 164 teeth and 157 teeth. Also, what is "SFI Approved?"

Scratch that. I was looking at a plate for another application.
