View Full Version : Shaft Key on V-Drive

Does anybody know where to get a shaft key for a 01 x-star for the transmission side of the drive shaft.

My key shattered over the weekend and I need to locate a new one. SkiDim does not sell them - they pointed me to a dealer. I was wondering if somebody knows if there is an auto part that I could use.

Hardware stores have them.

I am wondering if it is stainless or some other type of metal. Do you know?

Why not your dealer? I'm pretty sure I have heard get the soft metal version and not a stainless steel one. You want this to sheer when you hit something and not damage the prop or shaft.

Mind if I ask how you shattered it?

I've put a call into the dealer, but sometimes they are slow to respond. I have no objection to using the dealer, but if I could find the part locally (and cheaper) I thought I would go for it.

I figured that the keyway should be weaker than the surrounding brass, as a point of failure to protect the engine.

I shattered it on sunday when I was pulling my girlfriend wakeboarding. She fell and I came arround to pick her up and she missed the rope. I had been coasting while she attempted to grab the line. When she missed it, I put the boat in reverse and she got the line. After this it would not go forward or back. When I took the nut off of the transmission side of the shaft, it came off very easily, so I am wondering if it was loose and there was some slop in the connection that allowed the key to take extra abuse.

Maybe try Skidim and they can mail this part to you.

As always SkiDim is my first call. Unfortunately they don't have them and told me to contact my dealer.

I talked with my MasterCraft dealer. They told me that I can use any 1/4" x 1" stainless keyway for that connection.
