I measured my insert last nite, but didn't write it down . Now i'm going to buy and I'm confused.

5/8 x 5/16 (http://www.iboats.com/5-8-x-5-16-Flexible-Vinyl-Insert-V12-0342/dm/cart_id.139473000--session_id.628354356--view_id.272146)

1 x 1/2 (http://www.iboats.com/1-x1-2-Black-Bulk-Flexible-Rub-Rail-Insert-50-Taco/dm/cart_id.139473000--session_id.628354356--view_id.373497)

Problem is they both have a 5/8 measurement in them and that's the only measurement I remember.:o

I just re-measured and it's the 1 x 1/2 (http://www.iboats.com/1-x1-2-Black-Bulk-Flexible-Rub-Rail-Insert-50-Taco/dm/cart_id.139473000--session_id.628354356--view_id.373497) for future reference.

I was going to post up but it looks like you got it. My 83 has the smaller one of the two you listed I just got it from West Marine today and it is a perfect match for anyone looking for this year this is the one for you.

iboats.com has a handy Rub Rail finder on their website here: http://www.iboats.com/mall/rub_rail/?cart_id=334883092&session_id=936304892

1 x 1/2" it is for a 1996.

I assume you mean the rub rail insert?

The most important thing is that the insert is soft and pliable. Either choose a warm sunny day or work inside. I did mine outside on a cooler day and used a hair dryer on foot-long sections of insert as I went along. Some guys use a bucket of hot water with the insert coiled in that and then pull it out as they go along.

Start at the stern at the rub rail cap. You can go either left or right -- your choice. Place a couple inches of the bottom of the insert in the rigid molding and use a plastic putty knife to pop the upper part of the insert in. Just keep working you way along. A couple taps with a soft rubber mallet as you go along helps to make sure it is fully seated. A typical 20' boat should take no more than an hour.

Thanks for the info. How many feet of rub rail insert would you recommend for a 20' boat? I've notice iBoats has 50', 70' and 200' black insert options.

I would guess that for a 205, 50' might be a shade too short -- 41' total length plus the stern width plus the bow shape, etc. But, when in doubt, measure! Use a surveyors tape measure or something similar and check it just to be sure. Maybe the guys at iboats can also tell you.
