View Full Version : Engine squeal?

So when i start my boat, i get a nice loud high pitch squeal. I use to just last for about 2 mins, and it has progressively gotten longer. Sometimes it will go away right away, sometimes it will take a bit of running. Sometime it will not squeal if we have used the boat and shut it off and turned it on again, sometimes it will.

My father told me her replaced the belt recently, but could that be the culprit?

sounds like belt squeal. depending upon the age of your boat, tighten the belt or replace the tensioner. this can be annoying and scary at first, I know from experience. on older boats like my 93, there is only one belt and it is pretty cheap so I replace it every two years and keep a spare in the boat in case it breaks.

I just looked at your profile and it shows you have a 94 205. pivot the alternator to tighten the belt. loosen the bolts holding the alternator and use a pry bar or large screw driver to pull it out some and tighten bolts while holding tension.

yea, ive replaced the belt a couple of times. Maybe my dad just did not tighten it enough. I will give it a try.

The squeal is most likely coming from your impeller. Check the tension on the belt first. If that's OK, I would change the impeller.

good call. can you pick up impellers at west marine, or is it something you need to get from the dealer / online?

You should be able to get one from West Marine. Just make sure you get the correct impeller!!! Check the make of the raw water pump.

drip some water on the belt while its running. if the squeal stops, you need to tighten the belt. If it still squeals, then its probably your impeller. I had to tighten my belt every month or so on my '87 190. if i let it squeal too long, it ended up getting belt dust all over my engine compartment.

You could be dealing with a pulley alignment issue. Take the belt off and lay a straight edge on the pulleys and see how true they are. Might even check the bolts to make sure the pulleys are secure.

There is a little issue with the pulley alignment, but from what i remember it wasn't something that could be easily fixed, without taking it either back to miami for my dad to work on or the dealer.

I did get some belt spray and they actually stopped the squealing. Im assuming this is just a temporary fix and as soon as the stuff drys off it will start squealing again?

Buy a new belt and your noise will go away for a while, but ultimately you need to fix the belt alignment as it wears out belts prematurely.

I'm sure you will appreciate being able to operate your boat without the hair on the back of your neck standing up.

If your dad is like mine, he'll leave it flopping because "you'll pull the bearings out of alternator/water pump"
