We are trying to wake surf behind a 1997 Pro star 205 with a rear sofa fat sack and don't have enough wake to get a surfable wake.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I would try to add a Fat Sack in each side of the bow storage area as it sounds like your boat is unbalanced. Optimal is a 60/40 split meaning 60% of your ballast is in the back and 40% in the bow. It also helps to have passengers ride on the side of the boat you are trying to surf behind. Good luck, it's lots of fun.

Here's my wake on a 2004 Prostar 209 with 750 lbs of ballast where the rear seat is located. I could surf some before I added the weight, but this was so much better.

You need a fat sac next to the motor box, on the side that you are surfing, and put all passengers on that side as well. Make sure that there is some weight up front as well, otherwise the wake will be washed out.

i've found the weight can NOT be evenly distributed on both sides. You need most of the weight on the side you're surf'in on. Add a fat sac (along with your rear sofa) on the surf'in side or 2/3 people. They need to be on the rear corner of your boat. Good measure for me is the rub rail on my surf'in side has to be in or under the water.....

What is the rub rail? We tried a fat sack in the rear but this did not cut it.

That's exactly what we do for our 205

Talk to Apri about their setup for wake surfing,

she's got an X-9 and I saw her husband Jim surf and their boat didn't look like it was barely weighted down at all.

I've got the fat seat in my 94 205. I have to drain about half of it then push over to the side. I'm surfing on. I put as fat sack on top of that in the back corner. I move people around to adjust the wake. The best I have had yeat was when I borrowed some weight from a buddy. I had the above plus another fat sack in the walkthrough and abotu 400 lbs of lead behind the driver's seat. IT was steep but it was big and clean.

i have a 92 190, and can surf with NO ballast in the boat, granted it is alittle easier behind a boat with a bigger wake. It's really all in the boat driving. I'd offer some help but i've never driven it. Kind of odd...considering i have the most hours behind the wheel of my boat...hm....

Anyone have any suggestions on wieghting a '02 X30 for wake surfing. We tried it today but the wake kept washing out. I had both read ballast bags and the center ballast tank full. For some reason, it is really hard to hold my boat at wakeboard speeds (~18 mph) or wake surfing. Also, what speed should my boat be doing for wake surfing?

In my 205, we drop two 200# bags on the passenger side of the motorbox, and a full 600# bag across in the back bin. The boat sits really deep in the water.

You want to be able to see a clean 2-3' wave on that side, goofy foot riders almost never get as clean a wave (when the boat is set up with the weight on the other side) because of the roatation of the prop.

The key to wake surfin' is to drive slow 8-10 mph. Once you see the good wave break you will know when to stop. A little effort with the board will keep you right in the sweet spot and you can surf as long as you want.

:headbang: *UPDATE* Make sure you have the right board. Apparently, I bought a shorter board which is aimed at trick surfing. This week-end we borrowed a CWB "ride" board and it was like a night and day difference. This board is about 6 inches longer than mine and was so easy to surf! Everyone could do it! So now I'm fine with the one fat sac.....although I may still add one on the side of the boat the surfer is located.

We are between 9-11.5 MPH when surfing. :steering:

I surf behind my '95 PS190 with no added weight using a 1960's era longboard. Pretty cool. I need to find someone local who has one of those wakesurf specific boards to see if I can still do it on one of those "shorties".

I have my X-2 dialed in, but for the purpose of a DD 205, I will tell you haw we weight an X-9 for an incredible wave, even for goofy footers. Factory rear ballst full, two side sacs (or one reg sac) full next to motor box on the side you are surfing. We had about 6 ppl in the boat plus surfer. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the wave was. I ride goofy foot and the wave was really clean, long and mid thigh high on a 6'3" guy. I was busting 3's like it was in my blood !!! We had speed set to 9.5 - 9.8. That is one of the other key factors. Just keep bumping PP up or down until that wave is super clean.

If so, were any underwater cables involved?

I have a 02 PS197, and bought a Hyperlite Broadcast 4'9". With rear ballast full and only a couple of riders in the boat, I can't get the thing to glide enough to toss the rope away. Moved up on the board until the tip was nearly under , still not enough. Boat speed 10-12.

I see comments like those from MasterCrafting saying it can be done with no ballast...? Maybe his board is a lot longer than mine.

Any suggestions? Am I going to have to load the boat up a lot more? Is the board too short? I see the CWB Ride everyone talks about is a longer board. The broadcast was recommended to me by the guys at buywake.com.......

I have the CWB sunami (sp?) and it was difficult to find the groove to toss the rope. With the CWB Ride board we were tossing the rope almost as soon as we got up............it was really that much easier.

You should be able to ride w/o the rope, but here are a few more suggestions. Make sure all of the ballast is on the side you are surfing on.

Also, it is not about moving forward on the board, it is about weighting the front of the board and unweighting the back. I find this helpful for newbies "Front foot is gas, back foot is emergency brake". Keep your front foot where it is comfy and move your back foot forward some. Kind of simple, but make sure you are facing the wake, much easier this way. Keep your toes pretty close to the toeside rail of the board, it will help you keep your edge into the wave face. I am about 230lbs and ride a 4'8" Broadcast. My front foot is just in front of the symbol and my rear foot is just in front of the fins.

It has been a loooong time since I have slalomed skiied, but I think about weighting the front of the board like slowing the ski down pre-turn. Just put your weight forward. In this example the results are opposite though; this makes the surfer faster.
